Excellent Information,
By A Customer
This review is from: Carter Carburetors (Paperback)
This book has helped tremendously with my Carter 9605 carburetor. I had minimal understanding of carburetor function before reading this book, and now I have a solid understanding of carburetion in general and an even more detailed understanding of Carter carburetors. Everyone knows Holleys, but few know Carters and Edelbrock Performers (which are just dressed up Carter AFB's). They're not as complex as most are led to believe. The only downside is that the chapters aren't clearly titled. Chapter 6 "Carburetor Tuning" isn't at all carburetor related, although the information is still good. It gives tips on other components of the car. For carburetor tuning procedures you have to look under Chapter 5 "Modifications". Otherwise it's a great book.

A Complete Quide of all the Carter Thermo-Quad, AFB, AVS & WCFB models. Great tips on proper selection and installation as well as modifications for performance and rebuilding. A MUST have for all Cater carb owners.

an ok book, but not exceptional,
This review is from: Carter Carburetors (Paperback)
If you've never rebuilt a carter carb, this book may be Ok. If your looking for jet sizes used on OEM applications, or tricks to make your thermoquad, etc run even better...this book has nothing to offer. No venturi size comparison, no metering rod or jet sizing, no suggestions for compensating for altitude, etc. The little sheet of paper that comes with most carb kits will give you the same set up info as this book, and its "free" with the carb kit.

A Medium Book,

If you don't know how to rebuild your Carter carb then this is a decent book. If what you want is an in-depth explanation of the various circuits for each carburetor then this book is sadly inadequate. Tuning is addressed in the most general terms and there is very little in the way of model specific tuning. I'd recommend "How To Tune & Modify Carburetor Performance" by Forbes Aird and Malcom Elston (This book only covers AVS and AFB nothing else from Carter. It is not very available but it is a very good book.) and "How to Build Horsepower Vol.2" by David Vizard (I recommend that book without reservation. There is no actual tuning information about Carters in this book but there is an in depth section on Rochester Quadrajets that is largely applicable. The rest of the general tuning information applies directly.) I also recommend Gerard Forgnone's web page "Carburetor Tuning the Scientific Way" It's about about Holleys but the general information is excellent and it is free. (Apparently the including of URLs in a review is prohibited but you should be able to find the page by searching with the term "carburetor tuning" in Google. He is a Holley guy, NOT a Carter guy so don't bug him with Carter questions). All those are better options for tuning. If you have something other than an AFB or AVS then this book may be your only option. This book doesn't "suck" but it is hardly a comprehensive reference guide to tuning and modifying.

Best purchase in a while!,

I found this to be a very informative and well written manual regarding not only Carter carburetors, but carbs in general. I am a novice at carb rebuilds and this book covered "theory" in enough detail to inspire me to dive right in... with great sucess! I recommend this book to anyone looking to self educate themselves on carburetor repair.

I ordered this book for my husband and he was thrilled with it. It has so much useful information and is really helping him with his rebuild project....a 1958 Corvette.

SA Design series: Carter Carburetors,

This review is from: Carter Carburetors (Paperback)
Typical of SA design books, gives a good overview of history, carb theory, and step-by-step overhaul/alteration with photographs. Definitely a match for their Holly carb book. Reasonably good reference for the casual street-rod enthusiast-probably a little basic for the true racer. Would like more "carb-manifold-motor" 'real life' successful combinations, but that sort of info is beyond the scope of most texts.
