I purchased this watch in late November of 2012 as a Christmas present from Amazon directly (not one of their Marketplace resellers) without realizing it did not include a Cartier Warranty. This was immediately a problem because the day after Christmas we needed to take it in to a jeweler for the metal bracelet to be sized and they refused to work on it without the Cartier warranty book (which was not included with the watch). We finally found a location willing to size the band (which I paid for versus having it done free with the Cartier warranty). Less than 3 weeks later the watch stopped working altogether. Without a Cartier Warranty my only option was to use the Amazon Watch repair service (it seems to be whitelabeled by a firm called RepairNow) which required me to send my watch to a jeweler in Kentucky (I live in CT). Sending the watch with the requisite insurance cost me over $80. A week later I have no acknowledgement from either Amazon or the KY jeweler that they have begun to work on the watch or know what's wrong with it. Needless to say, this has been a frustrating and disappointing experience! I am a longtime, loyal Amazon customer and feel abandoned. If they want to be more than a book store and sell expensive items like Cartier watches, they need to step up and meet an enhanced customer service standard. I am not sure if this is a grey market purchase that was not authorized by Cartier, but their reputation has been damaged too since I bought an expensive watch that only worked for 3 weeks and now don't know what is happening to it? Amazon should clearly disclose that this item does NOT come with the manufacturer's warranty and that you are out of luck if anything goes wrong. How can I trust any future purchases from Amazon?

There are two reasons often given for this tradition. The first (and likely apocryphal) is that "IV" is a representation for "Ivpiter", or Jupiter, the supreme Roman god, and that people were afraid to invoke his name on timepieces.

The real reason is aesthetics: watchmakers want to keep an approximate vertical symmetry in symbol width, and "IIII" is at better parity with "VIII" than "IV".

As for "correctness" of IV versus IIII, Roman numerals weren't standardized until long after the ancient Romans. Use of forms like "IIII" and "IIX" (for 8) and "IC" (for 99) was fairly common and, at times, preferred. It's a modern convention that there's only "one correct way" to write Roman numerals.

As Amazon is not a Authorised Dealer, the watch does not come with a warranty. For the same price, you can buy the watch from an authorised dealer and get a 2 year warranty which you can take to any Cartier store

Nice looking, simple and elegant watch. Quartz will allow her not to wear it every day without having to re-set.

I almost bought this watch for my fiance, but I realized suddenly that the Roman numerals were wrong. The four should be IV, not IIII. It saddens me that such a pricey watch could have such a sorrowful mistake.
