Product Description

A true French classic, this stainless steel Cartier Santos men's automatic watch keeps alive the tradition of Cartier's first wristwatch, which was named after dashing Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. This modern Santos has a clean, contemporary look that would feel right at home strolling down the Champs-Elysées. The square watch case features rounded corners, slightly raised bezel with screw-down accents, and unique steel octagonal crown set with a faceted spinel on its tip. The guilloche-patterned silver dial offers a full Roman numeral display in an italicized font and sword-shaped black hands (with seconds hand). Other features include a single-link stainless steel bracelet band that continues the screw-down accents from the bezel and water resistance to 30 meters (99 feet)--enabling it to withstand splashes and accidental dunks into the water, but not suitable for swimming.

An automatic (or self-winding) watch is fitted with a device (rotor) that automatically winds the spring by using the force of gravity. It needs no battery, but it will stop if you have been physically inactive for an extended period of time--as long as you're moving, the watch will stay powered. Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet invented the self-winding mechanism in 1770. It worked on the same principle as a modern pedometer, and was designed to wind as the owner walked.

I got this watch (in a lady's model) for my wife 6 years ago for our first wedding anniversary. After saving up, I decided to get a matching men's watch so that we would wear them together during dinner parties. I must say that this Cartier watch really lives up to its name. It came in a very nice red box with all the instructions on how to care for the watch. The automatic function last really long. It still runs after 2 days when you stop wearing it. I have always preferred automatic watches over quartz because it saves you the hassle of changing the batteries. That also makes it environmentally friendly. This watch has a sun burst watch face that reflects brilliantly in the light. The roman numerals and blue coloured hour and minute swordhands make it stand out. Needless to say, this watch catches attention. Especially when worn in a pair.

My only grouse is that it was so difficult to get this watch to Singapore. There are certain export restrictions in US that requires an OIA form to be filled by the seller once the product exceeds a certain amount. This form is necessary so it can clear the US Customs. I approached Amazon to fill in this form but was met with a brick wall. I almost couldn't get this watch if not for the help of the postal service in Singapore. I sincerely hope that Amazon could facilitate your overseas customers more in future. Its not good for business. I would have rated this watch 5 stars if not for this setback. Make it easier for us to buy things from you.

Nevertheless for the US citizens who wish to purchase a fine watch, you can't go wrong with a Cartier. They have a tradition of making fine watches and the price quoted on Amazon is quite reasonable. It would make a wonderful gift for your partner.
