Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

A modern interpretation of Cartier's signature Tank design, the Tank Francaise is a stylish blend of strength and beauty. This smaller version features a thin curved steel case on an elegant brushed steel bracelet with polished borders and a hidden deployment clasp. Visible beneath the sapphire crystal, the off-white dial boasts bold black Roman numerals, blue steel sword hands, and the Cartier name. An octagonal crown, appointed with a blue spinel cabochon, adds a distinctive touch. A sophisticated accent for any occasion, this watch offers Cartier calibre 057 quartz movement and is rated water resistant to 30 meters.

The Cartier Story

The name Cartier is synonymous with luxury, quality, and style. Founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier, the company became renowned worldwide for its design and production of beautiful jewelry and opulent objets d'art. A royal commission in 1904 made Cartier a supplier to Europe's Crowned Heads of State and led England's King Edward VII to describe Louis Cartier, grandson of the founder, as the jeweler of Kings, the King among jewellers.

By the early 20th century, Cartier had expanded its collection to include watches. At a time when pocket watches were still considered de rigueur for the distinguished gentleman, Cartier helped popularize the wristwatch, making it a bold fashion statement for men and women as well as a status symbol among the well-to-do. Louis Cartier is credited with creating the first men's wristwatch, the Santos, in 1904. He developed and named the watch for his client and friend, the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed a device that would allow him to read the time without taking his hands off the controls of his airplane.

Other classic designs followed, including Cartier's signature timepiece--the Tank--which debuted in 1917 during the First World War and was inspired by the tough new war machine the Americans introduced to the fighting in Europe. Cartier's first water-resistant watch was named after the Pasha of Marrakesh, who requested that Cartier create watch that he could wear while in his swimming pool and not lose track of time.

And while it is known more for its luxurious design, Cartier is also credited with creating the highly functional deployment folding clasp in 1910, which is now used by watchmakers around the globe.

Modern Cartier watchmakers still base their watch designs on the early fundamentals developed by Louis Cartier. Treasured by collectors, Cartier watches are distinguished by their impressive variety of shapes (round, square, oval, Tank, Tortue and Tonneau), by their exceptional materials and workmanship, and by their recognizable Cartier aesthetic, an elegant blend of classic and modern design.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only buy from authorized dealer, March 4, 2009
This review is from: Cartier Women's W51008Q3 Tank Francaise Stainless Steel Watch (Watch)
I got this watch from Amazon as a gift from my husband a few months ago. Last month, we found that there was a $300-400 problem with the circuitry. Our watch store told us to have the repair fixed under the warranty. I called Amazon with the gift receipt in hand but I did not have the exact price so they refused to honor the warranty. I don't know how you can have the exact price if you get the watch as a gift. My husband found his original receipt but Amazon refused to honor the warranty when he called with all the required information. He just got the run around on line in India for 20 minutes . It is not worth it. Buy from an authorized dealer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Brand -- Classic Quality, January 3, 2007
By Eric Wilkins "Wilko" (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Cartier Tank watch is a standard that began the style of these watches. Beautiful elegant styling that is a perfect gift. In my case it was a graduation gift for my wife who worked very hard at getting a degree as a working adult.
This watch comes with a full presentation box of red leather, as one would expect from such a premium brand. Even the manual comes in its own matching red leather bound box. The watch is snug in a white kid leather padded box around a pillow of the same material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy, June 19, 2009
This review is from: Cartier Women's W51008Q3 Tank Francaise Stainless Steel Watch (Watch)
I bought this watch for my girlfriend and she loves it. Took it to the Cartier boutique to have it sized and it is perfect. I don't know why the person from the previous post could not get service, but if you go to the boutique, they will service it.
