Cartoon Rarities of the 1930s

If you are looking for a time machine then this is a great avenue to take. If you are looking for a bit of American history you will find it here! If you are looking to laugh your ass off then you will not be disappointed! The cartoons in this collection are OLD and have been RESTORED; so if you are young and AVITAR is what you are looking for then this is NOT for you! If you are politically Correct then KEEP MOVING because you will probably need you meds after watching these! Great Fun and NOT politically Correct! Did I mention that they were great fun!

I am a fan of early cartoons specially the ones from the 20's,30's and 40's, this product made me very happy and I highly recomend it. The sound and picture are of great quality, a great collectable item. A treasure of american animation.

These cartoons were old when my mother was a girl and not made just for children. They would pop up off and on when I was a kid and I enjoyed the novelty of them, most are very funny. Some are just sweet and pretty. Well worth owning.

Too many of this compliations 'toons have appeared elsewhere in better condition.

They include;
TOYLAND ADVENTURE (VAN BEUREN), PUDDLE PRANKS (FLIP-IWERKS),BARS AND STRIPES (KRAZY KAT-MINTZ), OLD MOTHER HUBBARD (COMICOLOR-IWERKS), TIGHT ROPE TRICKS (TOM+JERRY-VAN BEUREN), I WANNA BE A SAILOR (AVERY-WB), PASTRY TOWN WEDDING (RAINBOW PARADE-VAN BEUREN), BIRD SCOUTS (RAINBOW PARADE-VAN BEUREN), BEACH COMBERS (OSWALD RABBIT-LANTZ), BETTY BOOP'S KER-CHOO (FLEISCHER), BOSKO AT THE BEACH (WB), THE FARMERETTE (VAN BEUREN), HUNKY AND SPUNKY (FLEISCHER), BOOM BOOM (PORKY+BEANS-WB), BEAUTY SHOP (IWERKS-LAWSON WOOD).

Most of these Van Beuren 'toons are now available as acceptable to gorgeous prints on compliations by Thunderbean Animation and are simply superior to what is presented here.

Others are to be found elsewhere in one format or other (there is a complete Flip the Frog set available on Amazon France). The sole "Oswald" cartoon here is also to be found on an available compilation and it's difficult to understand why Alpha couldn't find one that hasn't been released on dvd of the dozens that were made in the '30s. It is tough to get a wholly original compliation of 1930s cartoon together, but this set could have been better.

HOWEVER - the Bosko cartoon "Bosko at the Beach" is very funny as are all Bosko's and anything directed by Friz Freleng in the early 30's. "Hunky and Spunky" while not the most interesting 'toon here is noteable for it's rarity as a late-Fleischer Studios effort (yet good drawing and animation can't save this utterly saccharine and dull Waldman creation), but the set's utter gem is the inclusion of the Porky Pig and Beans the cat outing titled "Boom Boom".

"Boom Boom" places Porky and pals in the trenches of World War I. To the best of my knowledge, this is the second and last time this subject was explored at Warner Bros., the first being the very funny "Bosko the Doughboy". This is not so much funny as it is bizarre and uncomfortable.

The violent deaths of cartoon critters have been a staple of American animation since forever, yet here when an animal has been shelled into oblivion his angel-winged ghost ascending to heaven isn't funny or even cute.

I guess I'm more sensitive than most having had relatives who fought the Great War, but the angry shells chasing our heroes were more horrifying than anything else, if only because their animated victim's demise was portrayed as quite so permanent.

Later, Porky's CO is captured, bound and tortured with a cigarrete lighter to the soles of his feet.

Again, bondage and torture have been repeatedly the source of gags over the years but here it's just - well, there simply aren't words.

It's about as funny as watching Donald Duck be water-boarded.

On second thought, maybe that would be funny...

Anyhow, the disc is worth it from Amazon third parties. Enjoy!

This was a great addition to my older cartoons collection. It took me back to the 1950s and the cartoons used as fillers on some of the children's shows.

I was disappointed that there was only one Bosko cartoon on this disc. And NO Peanut Butter Sandwiches! I had seen the Porky Pig cartoon on TV.
