4.0 out of 5 stars Good Old Farmer Al Falfa, October 10, 2004
This review is from: Cartoonal Knowledge: The Return Of Farmer Gray (1920S-USA) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
For those of us who grew up in the 1950s, we can well recall that cartoon programs were extremely limited. We had Betty Boop, Popeye the Sailor showed up around 1956 and a couple of other shows. Farmer Al Falfa was one of the few kids shows we had. Unlike the other cartoons, these were silent, logical given the years they were made, and very entertaining. They were in a way a forbidden pleasure because these cartoons as originally made and shown were very violent. The violence was tempered by the fact that we knew the violence was fake and within the realm of a cartoon. For some reason, in those days we did not need things like warning signs on a Superman cape to tell us that wearing the cape would not let us fly. We survived having none of the infantilizing warnings and "safeguards" that seem to be required now. We knew the difference between reality and a cartoon and a TV show. This reissue of Farmer Al Falfa cartoons is obviously edited to remove many of the more violent events. Whilke this ruins the insane humor of the cartoon, what remains is a wonderful collection of creative production which allows us to remember our youth or expose the fragile youth of the current generation to a knew realm of creative production.
