The "Cartridge Comparison Guide 2" expands on the information in the excellent 1st edition by now adding information on shotgun loads. This is an exceptionally comprehensive guide to rifle, handgun, and shotgun cartridge characteristics that is geared to allowing the selection of an appropriate caliber, cartridge, and bullet type to meet individual needs. I grew up in a family that practiced subsistence hunting and am now in the process of opening a gun shop catering to hunters, so feel comfortable with the usefulness and accuracy of the information provided in this book.

Most hunters know that no caliber or load is ideal for every shooter (younger shooters use lighter loads for less felt recoil) or type of game (you wouldn't use a .308 on a squirrel hunt), so will try to appropriately match the rifle and cartridge selection to the shooter and expected application. This book is designed to make the matching a lot easier and more scientific by asking the importing questions upfront and then providing data tables to narrow down the choices from hundreds of commercially available cartridges down to a manageable handful. In addition to the data tables, there are Appendixes that provide greater detail on Identifying Game Animal's Physical Structures, several on bullet types and performance characteristics, and more on other cartridge/bullet related information.

I also like the spiral binding for this type of reference book since it allows for it to be placed flat on a counter and read by several people (me and my customer) at the same time.

This is a fantastic reference for the hunter or target shooter.

Highly Recommended!

CFH

Warning not for reloaders. If someone else would have stated that I would not have bought this book but it is a good tool. Please read on.

If you want to learn about: how much kick is going to be generated to your shoulder using specific rounds you can buy in the store, the drop of the round at various ranges, the impact of the round at those ranges, the FPS of the round that is usually printed on the package, and which style of round is best for what game you are hunting for, this book is great. The formula is provided to figure this out on your own but most people don't have the equipment to measure muzzel pressures so it's {oh well) if you are into reloading and using this data!.

If you reload and want to use the charts for that purpose you are wasting your money. The only thing mentioned about reloading in the book is: that it is not meant for reloading and that various powder burn rate, primers, projectile and case variances make a difference in the amount of kick the weapon gives. Any reloader knows that.

This book is mostly usefull for a beginner that is concerned about how much kick a weapon has with a specfic manufactured round that wants to know bullet drop at various ranges based on scope zero starting at 100 yards for rifles. The book does have information on multiple brands of rounds that are made but tends to use data from the higher priced bullets. But, if you are really into hunting, you don't go buy reloads off the shelf with no data on them.

I did find the book valuable when it came to teaching about the differences of impact, penetration, shock, velocity and type of bullet for stock ammunition for each purpose.

This Guide is full of cartridge information on hundreds of calibers of rifles, shotguns and handguns. It contains numerous tables grouped by caliber, cartridge name, bullet weight, muzzle energy, and recoil energy to mention a few. It also covers bullet design and purpose. This guide will be very helpful when choosing a cartridge and bullet weight for a specific purpose as it eliminates much of the guesswork.

Dissatisfied with the information on ballistic performance or the lack of it. I expected more
details about long range performance.

Literally a ton of comparison information I have never come across anywhere else! Even at a better than MSRP cost, I thought it was pricey, but took a chance. I'm glad I did!
