this is without question, my favorite skullflower album. that is really saying something. IIIrd gatekeeper and last shot at heaven also vie for that title, but this is where skullflower shook loose all which kept them grounded to earth, if dancing naked in circles around stonehenge at midnight wearing nothing but dio t-shirts, blissful smiles and those silly red devil horns that they sell at the english equivalents of wal-mart for halloween qualifies as such. the only comparable listening moment in my life was the first time i put on coltrane's ascension. laying down upon the carpet, the carpet becomes the sky and then the floor of the sky and you are then actually above the sky. all chakras and kundalinis and electromagnetic fields act in unison to make themselves fulfilled and then unnecessary. all is golden and shining and harmonious. if you have any passing interest in an utopian nexus of psychedelia, improvised musics, free jazz, metal and the aforementioned naked dancing around stonehenge, you need this in your life. time becomes space.

5.0 out of 5 stars Skullflower - 'Carved Into Roses' (VHF Records), February 15, 2011
This review is from: Carved Into Roses (Audio CD)
Skullflower's excellent follow-up to their out-standing 'IIIrd Gatekeeper' effort [see my review]. All six of these total mind-melting tracks will manage to fully pull your senses in. Myself, I liked this CD's three epic songs the best. The thirteen-minute brain damaging "The Rose Wallpaper", the ten-minute "Shiny Birds Of Doom" and what might just be Skullflower's best track here (or possibly of anything they'd ever done) period - the fantastic twelve-minute true stoner rock piece of pure brilliance "Metal Lurgical King". It rarely gets better than this. So highly recommended, it hurts.
