4.0 out of 5 stars Carved in Memory by Ethan Jones June 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a short story that is the prequel to the Ethan Jones' novel "Arctic Wargame (A Justin Hall Novel)". The first two chapters of the book are included after the story.

"Carved in Memory" is a very taut and suspenseful story of Justin Hall, who is a Canadian Intelligence Service Agent and a captive of a terrorist group in Libya. He is there on a rescue mission along with others from the CIS. When we first meet Justin, he has been tortured and continues to be tortured by by a man named Tarek and eventually Ali and his guards, until Justin gives up some information that Ali wants. Justin knows that he must somehow escape the awful prison conditions he is living in and also the torture and beating. Another prisoner, Abdul, is imprisoned next to him and he must escape, too. Justin Hall is very intelligent and knows what he must do to get Ali a little bit on his side. Ali is never going to trust Justin 100%, but Justin knows what the bargaining chip is that will buy him some time and possibly a let-up to the torture.

This short story doesn't take long to read and it is enjoyable and exciting. It is well-written, although not academic in a work like this, but the idea is to entertain and to provide enjoyment to the reader.

I read, also, the first two chapters of "Arctic Wargame" and I'd like to finish the book. Stories of expeditions and missions to the Arctic have always been enjoyable and exciting because the environment holds so many challenges for characters, and thus for the reader.

Four stars for the short story, "Carved in Memory" because I liked it and I'd like to read more of
Ethan Jones's writing. Arctic Wargame (A Justin Hall Novel)

Recommended for readers who like action and adventure, military novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast-paced, suspenseful cliffhanger June 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Carved in Memory" is a short story prequel to the author's recently published novel Arctic Wargame. The story serves to introduce Justin Hall, one of the primary characters in Arctic Wargame. Brief references are also made to two other characters: Carrie, Justin's partner in the Canadian Intelligence Service; and Abdul, Justin's local connection with the Libyan government.

The story is short - only 325 Kindle locations - but it begins and ends with a bang, as Justin, who's being tortured by his terrorist captors, is forced to use all his wits in a desperate attempt to escape from the dungeon where he's being held.

I enjoyed the story, which succeeded in piquing my interest in Arctic Wargame. It's a fast-paced, suspenseful cliffhanger, written in a crisp, no-wasted-words style.

4.0 out of 5 stars I want more of Justin Hall June 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Read the previous review for the specifics of the short story.

Carved in Memory is a short story prequel to Arctic Wargames. I really liked it and felt an immediate bond with the main character. Fast paced to be sure. Enticing - absolutely. Why only four stars? It ended too soon and I was not ready for the abrupt ending. Fortunately, I have Arctic Wargames in my possession and will start reading it when I complete the promised reviews.

I love the characters. I want more stories! Lots of action, but not too grizzly. A little romance, but not too lovey dovey or sexy. Perfect mix.
