Book Description

October 1, 2000
Watching the form of a living creature -- such as a bird, fish, or butterfly -- gradually emerge from a piece of beautiful seasoned hardwood is one of the carver's most exciting and satisfying experiences. Whether you're a skilled carver, a woodworker familiar with other aspects of the craft, or a sculptor eager to give carving a try, these 17 projects, all taken from the natural world, make a fine starting point. Ranging from the realistic to the abstract, and from freestanding sculptures to functional decorative objects, all capture the energy and the subtle details that make carvings come alive. Here is information on creating that perfect fusion between subject and wood grain, on fixing your own mistakes as well as faults in the wood itself, and on judging your work at every stage. Carve a plane-leaf bowl, tree frog on a branch, heron, otter relief, cobra, and more!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a treasure for any carver, June 11, 2010
By
This review is from: Carving Nature: Wildlife Studies in Wood (Paperback)
After paying $4.00 in overdue library fines, I'm buying this book for us! Both my husband and I carve. He prefers the natural wood finish; I usually paint my carvings. This book will work for both of us--but is a particular treasure for those don't want to paint. Husband is just finishing the cobra snake in this book. He's done it in black walnut and while I am not particularly fond of snakes, I have to admit that it is a fascinating work and a beautiful carving. Husband says he particularly likes the authors patterns and guiding advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carving nature, May 19, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Carving Nature: Wildlife Studies in Wood (Paperback)
Let me begin with a disclaimer. I am no carver. I do, however, appreciate carving and sculptures. To my unpractised eye, the amply illustrated book appears to be a great how-to book for the amateur to advanced carver. (Consider also who the publisher is-- the Guild of Master Craftsman...) After drooling over the illustrations in a copy of the book found at my library, I have decided to purchase a copy for a father's day gift. I anticipate my gift being well-used by my father!
