Book Description

December 1, 2011 A Life in Pictures
One of Hollywood's best-loved stars, the debonair actor of more than 70 films embodies masculine chic—here is his Life in Pictures

Archie Leach, born in England into poverty, transformed himself into Cary Grant and became rich and famous in America, an international star, and an icon of gentlemanly style. This book provides a pictorial account of his fascinating life story. A partial inspiration for James Bond's mixture of chic, virility, and sex appeal, and celebrated by colleagues for his sense of humor, Cary Grant was also an accomplished actor, nominated twice for an Oscar and five times for a Golden Globe. With his suave, debonair personality, he conquered Hollywood and became an intimate friend of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Sophia Loren, all of whom he appears with here in photos. He is also shown with Ingrid Bergman, Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Mitchum, Doris Day, and Marilyn Monroe in this sumptuous collection of images telling his cinematic life story.

"Handsome; Cary Grant was both a troubled man and a manufactured myth and, for the most part, Cary Grant: A Life in Pictures does an effective job of telling both stories."  —CinemaSentries.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Cary, Cary, Cary! March 11, 2012
Format:Hardcover
At one point or another in the 20th Century, probably every male wished he could be Cary Grant...including Cary Grant himself! No actor every topped Grant's elegant, easy grace, sex appeal or light touch with a quip nor his versatility on screen. Originally published in France, CARY GRANT, A LIFE IN PICTURES is an entertaining photographic tribute to that singular movie star.

After a brief, opening mini-biography of CG, Yann-Brice Dherbier's book offers up 170 pages of b&w photographs of Grant arranged in chronological order. The pix are a mixture of candids, production stills, studio shots, movie posters, etc. Grant is seen on set, at award shows, at home, posing with other stars, etc. The photo quality varies but, all in all, it's an enjoyable look-back at a class act.

Cary Grant fans and classic movie buffs will enjoy CARY GRANT, A LIFE IN PICTURES. It's a much-needed reminder that he was truly one-of-a-kind. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cary in photos February 15, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Enjoyable picture book of Cary Grant's career.

One wish: that the photos were less Getty Images-dominated and more of the John Kobal standard. Pictures are not very sharp. Many seem to be too dark and lacking in detail (i.e. can't even see the lapels on some of his suits!)

Also, isn't that a misidentified woman on page 174?
The text identifies her as "Dina Merrill" but she looks much more like Barbara Sinatra to me!
