5.0 out of 5 stars First -and Best- recording of the Casablanca Suite, July 24, 2007
This review is from: Casablanca: Bogart Film Scores (Audio CD)
This CD is the reissue of the famous LP produced in 1973 by George Korngold with the collaboration of Charles Gerhardt. It includes 12 musical sections, corresponding to same number of films starred by Humphrey Bogart. Most of the scores were composed by Max Steiner ("Casablanca", "Passage to Marseille", "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", "The Big Sleep", "The Caine Mutiny", "Virginia City" and "Key Largo"), though there a few composed by Franz Waxman ("To have and have Not" and "The Two Mrs. Carrolls"), Friedrich Holländer ("Sabrina"), Victor Young ("The Left Hand of God") and Miklós Rózsa ("Sahara").

When this LP was issued there were no re-recordings of musical cues from said films. Now, for instance, we have more extended suites, or complete reconstructions, or partial or complete remasterings of the original soundtracks, from most of those films, but in 1973 nothing of that sort existed. Obviously the highlight of this CD is the Casablanca Suite, which lasts 8:36 minutes and includes all the main musical sections and themes of the film, including a short but beautiful piano-rendition of the "As time goes by" theme (not composed by Steiner). I understand this suite was assembled by Charles Gerhardt. He created a beautiful concert piece. There are some other versions of this suite, but, and I do not know why, they are always SHORTER than Gerhardt's version: Telarc (Kunzel) has a 5-minute version, and Silva has two versions of 5 and 7 minutes. Consequently no new version of this suite can be compared in quality and extension to the version produced by the couple Korngold/Gerhardt.

Several years ago "Turner" issued a CD with the original soundtrack of the film. If you love the music of "Casablanca", you should own also Turner's remastering, but without forgeting that the suite present on this CD will not be found in the soundtrack edition. For a fan of Casablanca, consequently, this CD is a MUST.

This has some great classics to bring back all the emotions of the original films. Good quality recording for the time.
