Editorial Reviews

Bogie was good, real good, but he didn't actually compose the music to his movies. Yet the film scores from greats such as Max Steiner on films ranging from film noir to adventuresome thrillers are among the best in the business. Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra recreate the best of Bogie's film scores in stereo for these classic films: Casablanca; Passage to Marseille; The Treasure of the Sierra Madre; The Big Sleep; The Caine Mutiny; To Have And Have Not; The Two Mrs. Carrolls; Sabrina; The Left Hand Of God; Sahara; Virginia City and Key Largo.

Several years ago, I was listening to a classical music radio station located just outside of Portland, Maine. Fred (the afternoon drive d.j.) suddenly switched gears from Mozart to Max Steiner! Suddenly the familiar Warner Bros Logo Music came blaring out of my speakers quickly to be followed by a piercing Morrocan Kettle Drum beat! Mysterious music? You bet! But I was completely mesmerized for more than 8 minutes by "THE CASABLANCA SUITE!" After which, I called the radio station, spoke to Fred and asked him where I could obtain a copy of the record album. Yes...this medley was available only on LP and Cassette! And that was my introduction to Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra. Needless to say, I collected every CG/NPO LP that had been released!

Getting back to the music itself and Mr. Bogart, there are so many identifiable themes that accentuate the talent HB displayed on screen. From the greedy hyperactive gold prospector in "The Treasure of Sierra Madre" to the calm, reassuring priest in "The Left Hand Of God." While the majority of this collection has Max Steiner's name on it...Franz Waxman, Victor Young and Miklos Rozsa also make contributions. And while I know very little about composer, Frederick Hollander, you can certainly conjure an image or two from his Main Theme for the original version of "Sabrina" with William Holden & Audrey Hepburn. [This is one of those rare films where HB gets the girl at the conclusion of the picture].

While a few purists might not like the analog tape remixes that are clearly present on this CD, I didn't have a problem with them. Actually, I was able to hear instruments that were buried. I also didn't miss the pops, clicks and scratches which (sadly) come through loud and clear on my 1973 LP.

You don't even have to be a fan of Bogart to enjoy this collection of beautiful and stirring movie themes complied by Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra. This recording showcases some of the greatest composers who ever worked in the business and this remastered set sounds even better than when they were first released on CD, and the quality on those were great! Most of the compositions on this album were by the great and legendary Max Steiner, but also represented are selections composed by Franz Waxman, Victor Young, Miklos Rozsa, all giants in the industry as well! The only composer I'm not familiar with is Frederick Hollander.
As with all of the music in the series of Charles Gerhardt tributes to musical icons and stars, it's all about the composers not about himself. They're orchestrated in a way that doesn't deviate from the source material, as with the thrilling symphonic picture of Steiner's "Casablanca". There's also a lighter, bubbly selection of the main title from "Sabrina", a real film departure for Bogart and a subtle and charming performance by him that also starred the adorable Audrey Hepburn. Also included in this album are a trio of wonderful music from films that Bogart co-starred in with his wife, Lauren Bacall..."The Big Sleep', "To Have And Have Not", and "Key Largo". Another highlight is the majestic yet sinister suite from the film, "The Treasure Of Sierra Madre", a movie that showcases one of Bogart's finest performances! There are more to enjoy on this album but I highlighted my personal favorites.
If you want to listen to the genius of these and other great film composers, I recommend that you check out the entire series of Charles Gerhardt recordings that pay loving tribute to them.

If you are a Bogie fan (and who isn't), then re-living some of his best movies through this soundtrack is a no-brainer. Quality is good and the selections are superb.

The digital booklet is a nice touch. You don't have to buy the physical album to get printed information regarding the album, and this is a nice touch. What more can I say.
