Book Description

January 1, 1995
Released in December 1942, Casablanca is the classic of all classic films, the enduring triumph of Hollywood's golden age. This volume contains the complete screenplay as well as a behind-the-scenes look at how the Oscar-winning movie was made, by one of its writers, Howard Koch. Charles Champlin, Roger Ebert, Umberto Eco, and others contribute incisive analyses of the movie's timeless appeal, and twenty-five beautifully reproduced stills capture the dramatically charged scenes of this true American classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Script and Stage Directions Underlying the Classic Film, March 15, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Casablanca: Script and Legend (Paperback)
Who knew that the screenplay for Casablanca hadn't been completed by the time filming started? In fact Ingrid Bergman was unsure how to act some scenes with Bogie because she didn't know if she was going to end up with him in the end or not. Also, there are some inconsistencies in the screenplay that would have been ironed out if more time had been available. This book is a wonderful companion to the film. It is remarkable how faithful to the screenplay the film actually is. The film critics' essays at the end are interesting, though they all benefit from twenty-twenty hindsight. The large format black and white photos of scenes from the film are keepsakes in themselves, and they appear alongside the relevant text. All in all it's hard to imagine a Casablanca aficionado not wanting to own this book.

If you're a fan of the great classics then you'll be pleasantly surprised with this behind the scenes look at one of the best examples of American film dominance. This detailed account outines the writer's true motivation and vision for his final masterpiece and leaves one with an unfettered look into an ever lasting symbol of the silver screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great look at a great movie, November 24, 2011
This review is from: Casablanca: Script and Legend (Paperback)
I loved this book. It provided some insight into the script and how it was developed, as well as the script itself. I throughly enjoyed reading the words which have always made this one of my favorite movies, and found out that a few things I thought I knew about the movie were wrong. A great companion piece for anyone who loves Casablanca.
