3.0 out of 5 stars Some great moments
Cascade is an album of mostly mid-tempo ballads. Mirror To My Woman's Mind and Subway are pleasant enough but they don't really stick in the mind. Gliding Like A Whale has a stronger melody and evocative synthesizer where the vocals take interesting twists and turns to lift the track above the average.

I have been a Peter Murphy fan for a long time and have always considered him to be my favorite artist of all time. "Deep" was at the top of my list till I acquired "Cascade". It further solidified why I enjoy this man's music so much. The CD opens with two of strongest tracks in "Mirror to my woman's mind" and the infectious "Subway". "I fall with your knife" may be Peter Murphy's best song to date as it stirs your insides with his strong vocals. The CD closes with the hauntingly powerful "Cascade" which whisks you away to another place. I am in total agreement with a previous reviewer...play it loud!! If your new to Peter Murphy, get Cascade. You won't be sorry.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some great moments, October 10, 2003

Cascade is an album of mostly mid-tempo ballads. Mirror To My Woman's Mind and Subway are pleasant enough but they don't really stick in the mind. Gliding Like A Whale has a stronger melody and evocative synthesizer where the vocals take interesting twists and turns to lift the track above the average.

The chugging beat and prominent guitar of Disappearing gives this song more of a rock feel, while Mercy Rain is a mellow ballad and I'll Fall With Your Knife is a meandering number with atmospheric instrumentation. The tempo picks up for The Scarlet Thing In You, a passionate love song with great imagery that almost, but not quite merits a place amongst his great songs.

Wild Birds Flock To Me has a complex arrangement and interesting tempo changes, but Huuvola is the real gem of this album. At last his divine voice gets to shine on a great melody line and a delicious blend of instruments for an eerie, transcendent feel. The title track has a spoken vocal introduction and a weird instrumental mix to make it quite an experimental and unusual arrangement

I am a great fan of Murphy's but Cascade doesn't leave a strong impression. The problem might be the absence of memorable tunes and catchy hooks. With the exception of Huuvola, none of the tracks here match his greatest songs like Indigo Eyes, Canvas Beauty or Time Has Nothing To Do With It.

4.0 out of 5 stars a nice dreamscape, January 10, 2004
This review is from: Cascade (Audio CD)
a lovely album that showcases Murphy's unique baritone voice in gradually evolving tunes (some rockers, some ballads). Though I do not consider this album to be in the same league as Dust, it is an accomplished transition from the days of Holy Smoke and a nice prelude to the work he ended up returning to with Bauhaus' Resurrection.

A nice album to revisit from time to time to enhance your visions and dreams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its Good, But Not Great., January 13, 2006
This review is from: Cascade (Audio CD)
After all these years, I never tire of listening to "Fall With Your Knife" - the best and most enduring track from Cascade. It is an emotionally intense song that showcases Peter's unique, powerful voice. Other good but less memorable tracks include "Disappearing" and "Scarlet Thing in You". Overall the album is good - maybe very good, but not great. Nevertheless, if you are a Murphy fan, it must be part of your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Brilliance!, February 10, 2001

This review is from: Cascade (Audio CD)
This album is my favorite to come out of the 1990s! Every track on this album is a work of art! Cascade is definitely the most solid of Peter Murphy's works. I think this album is far superior to Deep (what many consider the Murphy masterpiece). Although Cascade does not have a stand-out song like "Cuts You Up," it does sport 11 brilliant, imaginative tracks that make this album an experience of almost divine nature. "The Scarlet Thing In You" was the single, which may have turned some casual fans off. Although it's a wonderful track, taken alone, it is not the best this album has to offer. Hearing it within the context of this album, one realizes "Scarlet" is but a few strokes in an artistic musical masterpiece! Listen to the audio clips and I think you'll be impressed right away. The first four tracks are the most powerful and best representation of what this album has to offer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Poet, September 26, 2000

I have been a hard core Peter Murphy fan since "Deep" and am always left craving more of his sound and words. "Holy Smoke" left me somewhat unsatisfied with only a couple of tracks on there that I listened to again and again. I finally bought "Cascade" and am back full swing with my Peter worship. He delivers again and again with this album. It is a new level of Peter unheard before. Incredible arrangements of music and drippingly beautiful, poetic lyrics to seal the deal on another moving, fan-producing album. Every song has something entirely different to offer but all of them carry the thread of genuine Peter Murphy. This cd gives you the feeling you are listening to something that is private, sacred...more a journal of songs. Peter Murphy's voice still gives me goosebumps. I understand, now, the feelings of the Goth girl with spiky black hair that was crying and saying Peter's name over and over again at my first Peter Murphy concert in a little club in Germany. Get this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of Mr. Murphy's best works!, July 25, 2000

"Cascade" was defined by most critics as Peter Murphy's worst, inconsistent work , but this magnifiscent album is, for me, Pete's best. Even though the lyrics aren't as touching and appealing as the ones in "Deep" and "Should the world...", we can see confessional lyrics, references to his family, his relationship with his wife, etc. Best songs: "Mirror to my woman's mind", "Scarlet thing in you", "Huuvola", "Gliding like a whale" - genuine jewels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Peter has embraced his spiritual side, November 28, 1999
By
"porgo" (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews

A much quieter album than the previous two outings, this album connects on more of the spiritual plane. I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the softer - more mature-side of Mr. Murphy. He set the tempo of his future direction during the Cascade tour, where instead of the flash and spectacle of earlier stage entrances, he simply strode onto the stage, waved, and started playing. Hey, it never WAS the showmanship that kept me coming back - it was this man's musical genius.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thanks to the Reviewers!, July 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cascade (Audio CD)
I have been a long time fan since Pete's first 3 solo outings. Love Hysteria really grabbed me and has been on constant play in my household. Then came along Holy Smoke and I was bored. So when Cascade came along, I ignored it. After reading the customer reviews, I decided to give this work a shot. Everybody was right! This is excellent! Over time I may give this 5 stars. The soaring feel you get from these songs is amazing. I'm happy again and heartily endorse this for other fence sitters. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Murphy takes fresh step forward, July 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cascade (Audio CD)
With sombering moods echoing through richly melodic musical entrappings, Peter Murphy once again strikes a harmonious, fantasy laiden chord with listeners. Songs like "I'll fall on your knife", "Disappearing", and "The Scarlet Thing in You" reveal a wiser Murphy rejoicing from a distance as the music takes on a merrier, albeit still forlorn quality. Like after a spring rain, there is a freshness in the music that almost borders on uplifting, but all the while, murphy's mystical voice tells you that he's on his way back to that enchanted dwelling deep in the forest where these songs were originally inspired. This CD is a great way to leave reality for a while and experience the distant minstrel tones of that remarkable place.
