Mr. Arnold is an Oregonian and Timbers fan, and it shows. If you're looking for an unbiased book about both teams, this is not the one, as he builds up the Timbers in photos and coverage, and barely scratches the surface of Sounder tradition. His chapter entitled "The Villians" includes 5 Seattle players, 0 Portland players.

However, the pictures are great, the reading is entertaining and easy, and he does cover a lot of interesting history between both teams. I enjoyed it, and you might too - just be forwarded that ECSers and long-time Sounder supporters may get a little offended :)

Mr Arnold's attempt to capture the rivalry is a fairly good overview but lacks depth. Reads more like a string of newspaper or magazine articles. Do yourself a favor and wait until it finds its way to bargain racks.

"Cascadia Clash" by Geoffry C. Arnold is the best book currently on the market if you are looking for a comprehensive history that covers the 38 year rivalry between the Sounders FC and the Portland Timbers FC. It chronologically covers the creation of both clubs and dramatically portrays the watershed moments in the years leading up to the October 7th, 2012 game at Century Link field.
This is a beautiful book with many colorful photos that give equal representation to both teams and their supporters. This is a sturdy book. It's surprisingly rugged for a paperback. As if this book was designed to be carried in a March to the Match or repel any beer spilt on it at The Bitter End. I believe this book could be used as a beer coaster by a TA member, since they don't read, and it will still be presentable enough for an ECS member to easily read during an evening at a coffee shop.
This book is organized with easy to reference chapters and there are places in it where a passionate fan of either team may find themselves getting a bit misty eyed.

My wife: *enters living room and catches me quickly wiping tears from my cheeks while lounging on the couch reading this book*, "You are crying while reading a sports book?!"

Me: "I just found out why the Timbers Army sings, "You are my Sunshine"."

My wife: *shakes head, rolls eyes, and exits living room*

I'm assuming that this book was on a tight timeline and meant to be published before the start of the 2013 season, hence the focus on Seattle and Portland. However, the Cascadian rivalry also includes the Whitecaps of Vancouver B.C. who hardly get a mention in this book.
