Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover!, January 23, 2010
This review is from: In Case of Armageddon, Break Glass: The Pocket Guide for Life, Even Before the End of Days (Paperback)
I have never been a big student of eschatology. For years I simply held to a premillennial, pretribulation view of end times simply because the church I was baptized in as a disciple held to that view. For a few years I was aware that not everyone in the Church held to the same end times views but it seemed everyone I knew believed what I believed about the rapture of the Church, the tribulation, and other end times events. My first encounter with someone outside of my own paradigm was with a guy who was a disciple yet he held to a premillennial, midtribulation view. This led me to questioning what I knew about end times events and were they based on the Word of God?
Since those days, I have changed my views regarding end times several times. It seems you can read one book that holds to this view and it can convince you or you can read this book and it will convince you. In my Bible reading each year I usually end the year in the book of Revelation and it seems I can't help but read Revelation with an eye on end times events and what position do I hold in eschatology.
And then I read Jason DeVelvis' book In Case of Armageddon Break Glass. I figured by the title that the book would be another book that would study Revelation and claim to have some new keys to helping us work through the book. But not so! DeVelvis does take the reader through the Book of Revelation but he does so not by looking at Revelation as simply an end times guide to be lived out in the distant (or near depending on your millennial view) but DeVelvis believes that we need to ask the question, "How do I apply the Book of Revelation to my life today?"
From this position, DeVelvis takes his reader chapter by chapter through the Book of Revelation. He doesn't spend time debating what this means or what that means but he dives into the heart of Revelation by helping us to see that Jesus is speaking through John to disciples of Jesus living in those days (Revelation 2-3). DeVelvis believes that while Christians can try to understand end times, the real value of Revelation is that it calls us to be radical followers of Jesus Christ now not later! Themes such as holiness, prayer, perseverance in the midst of trails, etc. are all found in Revelation and John is writing through the Holy Spirit to call disciples to walk close to Jesus and obey Him (John 3:36; 14:15).
I believe that anyone willing to read this book will be greatly encouraged. Whether you come from a premillennial view, an amillennial view, or whatever view, you will be blessed by reading this book. It is not what you think by the title. It is so much more. Great job Jason!

Not What You Would Expect-But Better, February 4, 2010
This review is from: In Case of Armageddon, Break Glass: The Pocket Guide for Life, Even Before the End of Days (Paperback)
Jason DeVelvis has written a wonderful book called, In Case of Armageddon, Break Glass. Usually books written about the book of the Bible called Revelation, are written in a way that focus on explaining the difficult to understand passages; often, with explanations that are still a mystery to those who do not carry a degree in theology.
What Jason does is, address the issue of what needs to happen for a person to gain entry to Heaven before Armageddon takes place; because no one will want to live on Earth after it because of all of the terrible things that will happen. Salvation is all about having a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, admitting that each person is a sinner, and accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and living a life according to the guidelines that the Bible sets forth as pure and Holy. Jason references Paul's letters to the churches of old which instructs each church(person) with specific instructions regarding their Christian walk. In those letters, there is valuable information about how a Christian today is supposed to live, the traps to avoid, and the appropriate areas to concentrate on.
In a day when everything is sensationalize in the media, the return of Christ needs no hype. Spiritual warfare over each person's soul is no joke or game...it is real and the consequences of personal choices regarding salvation is real as well. The day of Judgement nears and this book attempts to educate those who read it into making life choices that will determine where that reader spends eternity-in Heaven rejoying or, in Hell suffering. Sin is the enemy of those wishing to go to Heaven. Jason has written a fairly good book detailing the importance of developing a relationship with God and helping a person to understand how to live a life that is acceptable to God to ensure that they do not end up in Hell due to a lack of knowledge. Definitely worth reading!

The Heart of the Text, January 25, 2010
This review is from: In Case of Armageddon, Break Glass: The Pocket Guide for Life, Even Before the End of Days (Paperback)
I have never been one to sit and idle on deep thoughts of exactly what will happen during the end times. I am not a dispensationalist and I don't buy into the Christian fiction of the Left Behind books. It just isn't something that appeals to me or my faith. So, when I sat down to read In Case of Armageddon, I went to it with some caution and lack of enthusiasm.
However, chapter by chapter, my enthusiasm for the text grew and I became more engaged with the text. Section by section, I discovered more than just the cliché thoughts about the Book of Revelation outlined eloquently throughout the book.
DeVelvis lays out, very clearly, the message that Paul is trying to convey to the people of early church, "Stay clear from the passions of the Roman empire." Although this message is reaching nearly 2000 years old, the DeVelvis is able to provide, through numerous examples from his own walk and examples of those he has gone through life with, an interpretation of Revelation that is culturally relevant and within reach of the reader.
I would recommend this to anyone that is searching for a book that provides clear starting point for any study of the Book of Revelation.
