Crooked Candle & Careless Kitten

Erle Stanley Gardner was once "the World's Greatest Author", his novels outsold the combined totals of his rivals. Gardner wrote the "Perry Mason" novels and other works. Gardner and others formed "The Court of Last Resort" to investigate the wrongfully convicted. The background tells of the era, the monetary figures date these stories.

"The Case of the Crooked Candle" (1944) begins when a car is hit by a truck. The couple see Perry Mason. The company offered a settlement, Perry gets a much larger sum - the truck company wants a quick settlement. Perry remembers another client connected to this company. Paul Drake learns strange news about the Karakul Company. Perry tries to contact owner Fred Milfield and meets his wife Daphne. Lieutenant Tragg shows up - Fred has been murdered! Carol Burbank and Perry do not find her father at the motel. When they stop at a favorite restaurant they find Roger Burbank with Lt. Tragg. Perry learns more about Daphne and Fred Milfield. Douglas Burwell has left San Francisco for Los Angeles. They visit Douglas and get his story. They go to visit the sheepherder living on Skinner Hills, and learn about Palermo's visit to Milfield's yacht where the body was found. When Della goes to meet Carol they meet a stranger. Della's aid to Carol has landed her in hot water. Carol Burbank finally tells Perry the truth. Lt. Tragg shows up to arrest Carol for Fred's murder! The Preliminary Hearing hears the witnesses. A photograph shows a candle with wax on each side of the candle. A time table of the tides is used. When the boat tilted over the body would slide to the bottom at low tide, but would not return when the boat leveled. Discrepancies of testimony result from witnesses who sometimes lie.
