Book Description

Culpepper Adventures
A tired old parrot in the pet store spells adventure for Dunc Culpepper and Amos when they learn that the parrot speaks four languages and has outlived ten of its owners.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

These lively stories kick off the Culpepper Adventures series, which Paulsen conceived in the hopes of converting reluctant readers-or those hooked on TV-to reading. Kids, especially middle-grade boys, will willingly turn off the set to follow the spirited antics of 10-year-old Dune Culpepper and his bumbling best friend, Amos. In these inaugural escapades, the two self-styled sleuths manage to uncover the cache of a ring of appliance thieves with the help of an 150-year-old parrot and escape from a fierce watchdog to discover who stole a valuable antique doll. Blending spunky characters, zippy dialogue and comical, sometimes outlandish, plots, Paulsen shows that he is every bit as adept at serving up reading fare that is lighter than his usual offerings. Ten more tales are promised in this well-intentioned, well-executed series. Ages 8-12.

From the Publisher

When Dunc Culpepper and his best friend, Amos, first see the parrot in a pet store, they're not impressed--it's smelly, scruffy, and missing half its feathers. They're only slightly impressed when they learn that the parrot speaks four languages, has outlived ten of its owners, and is probably 150 years old. But when the bird starts mouthing off about buried treasure, Dunc and Amos get pretty excited--let the amateur sleuthing begin!

This review is from: The Case of the Dirty Bird (Culpepper Adventures) (Paperback)
I read this book to several classes of 4th graders. It was a hoot! The an old parrot in a pet store is the Dirty Bird in question and it spouts random dialogue from old TV commercials, clues to the mystery and inappropriate language, never actually spelled out but implied. The characters and their interactions are funny with Amos providing comic relief. It all ends with an explosion. What more could you want to entertain a class! Highly recommended and I wish it was still in print.
