5.0 out of 5 stars Only book I found helpful
I took family medicine in the 5th block of third year, having done everything but surgery already and tried to read other books but found them cumbersome and redundant for what I already knew. I picked up this book in the last week before the NBME and loved it, it filled in a lot of the holes in my knowledge that are only taught in FM and not in the other rotations. The...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good for the shelf
I used this book extensively for the Family Medicine Shelf--and that was a bad idea. It's very basic and covers good cases that family medicine people might see on a daily basis, but for the shelf, this book is not even close to being enough. The Family Medicine shelf is an Internal Medicine test, essentially, so using this book did not help for it at all. Use 1st AID...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good for the shelf, November 2, 2007

It's very basic and covers good cases that family medicine people might see on a daily basis, but for the shelf, this book is not even close to being enough. The Family Medicine shelf is an Internal Medicine test, essentially, so using this book did not help for it at all. Use 1st AID for Medicine or 1st Aid for the Step One (yes, that's right) for the Family Shelf and you will be fine (even if Family is your first rotation). This book is not good for the family medicine clerkship shelf!

5.0 out of 5 stars Only book I found helpful, June 19, 2008
This review is from: Case Files Family Medicine (LANGE Case Files) (Paperback)
I took family medicine in the 5th block of third year, having done everything but surgery already and tried to read other books but found them cumbersome and redundant for what I already knew. I picked up this book in the last week before the NBME and loved it, it filled in a lot of the holes in my knowledge that are only taught in FM and not in the other rotations. The family board is not just an IM board, there is a ton of preventative medicine you have to know that is not on the IM board. I scored a 92 on the test. If you take FM early in third year, read a review book first, then this book. If you take it late, read the parts of the review book you haven't taken yet, then this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Holistic Family Medicine Review, July 21, 2009
This review is from: Case Files Family Medicine (LANGE Case Files) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. Yes it is an easy read, but it was perfect for how I used it. When I took Family Med clerkship I had only had Ob and IM, I picked up this book and read it before the end of my first week on my Family Med rotation and I felt it gave me a great foundation for the rest of the rotation. It really helped fill in the gaps I had in Peds and Preventative Medicine and it provided a good Ob review. The book was very relevant for the patient base I saw. It is not good enough for the shelf, but its a nice easy quick read that provides a solid foundation upon which to build your knowledge. This seems to be the main usefullness of the entire Case Files series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, April 11, 2009

Nice case set for Family Practice. Advanced for medical students (more than I used in school) but pretty good for interns. Great size book for portability and a bit of a more readable format than most books used during residency. It's a nice complement to standard list formatted review books and question and answer books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Case Files Family Medicine, August 31, 2008
This review is from: Case Files Family Medicine (LANGE Case Files) (Paperback)
The book is good to read if you have 1 day left until a family medicine exam- however the book is too basic and doesn't go indepth as far as pathophysiology is concerned.

Cases are very straightforward. Good summary information after each case. A little easier than the shelf questions themselves, but a good general review.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless, April 4, 2009
This review is from: Case Files Family Medicine (LANGE Case Files) (Paperback)
Family Medicine is basically an outpatient internal, and this book simply doesn't hold up. The material it covers is very basic and the review questions for each chapter don't even come close to shelf test material or USMLE, despite the book claiming that they are USMLE-style questions. The doctors that I rotated with, all use Harrison's as their main reference, and I think it's a much better idea to go by that and not by Case Files.

This required book for my grad program was twice as much at our university bookstore. I was able to purchase it for a great price and got it right away. Great experience.
