This review is from: Case History Plus (Audio CD)
I first read about Kevin Coyne nearly 40 years ago. But I never actually heard anything until recently. When I did I realized this guy was the real deal. I have about six albums now, but I think I like this the most. It is raw, more a demo than a finished product. But its rawness really suits the honesty. And I think anyone who hears him will feel that this is an honest singer and very interesting person. Great voice. The accent and sometimes the tone reminds me of Joe Cocker - but Cocker was not a writer and he went more and more unlistenably MOR - while the material in Case History demands more and more listening. The songs and their themes and the raw production gives them a timeless quality. So it is not for the watchers of American Idol, but for people who listen to feel. Put it besides Tim Rose, Townes van Zandt, Fred Neill (he doesn't sound like any of them) and the unheralded singers who just happen to have made sme of the most honest and perceptive and interesting music of the last fifty years.
