The build quality of the unit is very good, if not excellent. I'm rough with any cellphone and this case has done it's job in protecting my phone from accidental drops. The belt clip works well, but is fairly loose on a dress belt and the bottom lip makes it difficult to remove and replace the case while wearing it. Still, the case is light enough for the added features and worth it for the extra power it provides.
To preserve the iPhone's internal battery, I run the phone exclusively from the Fuel, and the phone automatically switches over to it's internal battery when the Fuel is drained. I typically get a day's usage out of the Fuel before it's completely drained, which isn't bad at all, as I still have 100% charge on the iPhone itself. I am a heavy user of my phone, as I work in IT and am constantly on wireless, email, internet and using other tools of my trade.
There are a few glaring flaws with this product. The on/off button to turn on the Fuel is located on the front, making it very easy to accidentally switch the Fuel's battery on or off without realizing it. Secondly, I wish the belt clip were detachable. While belt clip style holsters work for some phones (BlackBerry's have nice holsters), this one is cumbersome at best.
The most glaring flaw with this case is it's inability to charge both itself and the iPhone at the same time, despite what is claimed in the manufacturer's documentation.Read more ›
Since this was a problem with the clip only, I thought it would be a simple matter to acquire a replacement and a couple extras and I'd be back in business.
No such luck. "... we don't sell the clip by itself..." wrote Alma, from customer service at CaseMate. So was I to buy a brand new case to replace a case only two weeks old? Not likely.
I'll carry the case in my gear bag for charging, but without the clip, it becomes something of a less attractive proposition.
The charging aspect and overall design of the case seem reasonably good, but the clip and lack of an available replacement for an obviously weakly designed piece amount to deal breakers in my book. (The eye loops should have been made with more durable material.)
This applies to the iPhone 3G version of this case.
UPDATE: Alma wrote a nice letter back explaining that CaseMate hasn't carried the 3G line for fifteen months. Well, I bought one from a retailer. So no customer service on select items, or-- how exactly does that work? I think the product might well be supported for a time after its removal from the official line, but maybe that's just me. Caveat emptor, as the saying goes.

The clip broke the first time my dad tried to put it on. He decided he didn't need a clip to use the product but it would not hold a charge. Wasn't expensive but it was a waste.Published 19 months ago by Antoine E. Bassham
