1.0 out of 5 stars Five stars?? This is a joke, right?
I tried Diana Palmer based on the ratings from Amazon. I can't believe that I could disagree so radically with so many other people.

Let's see, where should I start?

5.0 out of 5 stars BOSS KIDNAPS SECRETARY!, May 14, 2000
Former TX Ranger and current detective (Dane) kidnaps his stubborn secretary/detective wannabe (Tess) and holds her at his ranch. Of course he does this only for her protection as her amateur detective work led a killer her doorstept!

Dane would never expose his true feelings to Tess...he'd almost tarnished her innocence long ago and she deserved more than just a shell of a man he considered himself to be.

Of course Tess is angry with Dane for his high handedness and avoids him -- which inevitably brings him to his senses! Can the hardened detective convince the beauty of his dreams to find safety in his arms...

A Keeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything a romance novel should be, January 13, 1998
This review is from: Case Of The Mesmerizing Boss (And the Winner Is) (Winner's Circle) (Paperback)
I couldn't stop reading this one, even though it was past 11 pm, and I had to work the next day! The hero was a rugged Texan, wounded in the past. The heroine is sweet and compassionate. The story is just wonderful. This book has everything that romance fans read romance for. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a hot romance with lots of sexual tension, August 4, 1998

I loved this story. Dane is a macho former Texas Ranger who desperately needs to be saved from his own good intentions & Tess is just the girl for the job. When they finally give into their desire it's the most steamy, sensual experience of their lives. I couldn't put this one down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go with the majority, May 17, 2005

This review is from: Case Of The Mesmerizing Boss (And the Winner Is) (Winner's Circle) (Paperback)
As I write this, the novel has all 5 star reviews but one. I cannot add much to those glowing reviews, other than to say they are right on and a good indicator of the true quality of this story. The chemistry between the hero and heroine leaps off the pages - even their arguments are electric! This one pulled me in and demanded my attention for the better part of a weekend, because I had to see what finally made Dane come around and admit that he loved Tess. It was almost a tear-jerker, but there is enough gentle humor in the dialogue to keep it from getting too sappy. Listen to the overwhelming positive remarks about this one, you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Read, November 18, 2004

Love 2 Read Novels "Sherry" (a small town in Kansas USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Case Of The Mesmerizing Boss (And the Winner Is) (Winner's Circle) (Paperback)
I read the reviews before I read the book. I was apprehensive after reading the one review that wasn't so good but forged ahead. I'm glad I did. I understand some of the points they tried to make about the story but I also understand that the influence of ones environment can shape the way we think. In this case Dane had come from some pretty messed up situations as well as being wounded enough to have to step down from his law enforcement job. What he needed was the love of a good woman and that would be Tess. She had what it took. Just when she had about given up.... you'll have to read to find out what happens. But, for me I enjoyed it. It kept me turning pages until wee hours of the night. If you like Diana Palmer you would like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excited to see this book on Kindle, October 5, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have been reading Diana Palmer since the mid 80's. I took a break from reading romances during most of the 90's because I was just too busy with work. This is one of the books I missed when it was in print and I was really excited to see it released for Kindle a few days ago. It is vintage Diana Palmer, so if you are familar with and enjoy her older books then you should enjoy this one as well. Palmer is a comfort read for me and this book did not dissapoint.

It is a typical Palmer plot with a hero who is 13 years older than than the heroine. She is a virgin who has been in love with the hero for years. They both have issues that lead to misunderstandings and complications, but in the end you get your happily-ever-after.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Palmer, December 5, 2009
Tess Merriweather had been in love with her boss, Dane Lassiter, for ages, but he never seemed to give her a second thought. In the office, he was all business. He seemed to prefer brief, uncomplicated interludes with shallow beauties instead of any lasting relationships. Tess was certain he barely knew she existed. That is, until a killer's bullet changed everything!

Tess witnessed a drug deal and the perpetrators were set on silencing her - permanently. To keep Tess safe, Dane had to keep her close and, despite his resolve, whenever they were together, they both went up in flames of passion. Dane taught Tess how to love, but he realized it was probably better for Tess if he walked away. Some day, she'd want a husband and children of her own, something the former Texas Ranger could never give her.

I loved the mystery surrounding Tess' unexpected pregnancy as she endeavored to hide her secret from the man she loved. Miracles indeed come in small packages and how sweet is the embrace of the mesmerizing boss!

1.0 out of 5 stars Five stars?? This is a joke, right?, July 5, 2004
This review is from: Case Of The Mesmerizing Boss (And the Winner Is) (Winner's Circle) (Paperback)
I tried Diana Palmer based on the ratings from Amazon. I can't believe that I could disagree so radically with so many other people.

Let's see, where should I start?

First, there are some misconceptions I would like to clear up. In this book, there is a reference to placenta previa during pregnancy. This author has simply not done her homework! Having had placenta previa during one of my pregnancies, and having done alot of research on the topic, I can tell you that everything about the way she describes it is wrong. The symptoms are wrong, the treatment is incorrect, even the basis is wrong! Placenta previa is actually VERY common in early pregnancy, I think it is even like one out of three; and ninety percent of the time it corrects on its own as the pregnancy advances. It is also not really dangerous until much later on in the pregnancy. With the symptoms as described in the book, it seems more like a threatened miscarriage. It is possible that Diana Palmer writes the situation the way it used to be understood, before the advent of sonograms, medication, and all the other hi-tech stuff that makes it easier - and more complex - to both diagnose and treat different pregnancy ailments.

Also, a previous reviewer mentioned that Tess was shot as she was doing amateur detective work. From what I understand in the book, it is nothing as romantic as that! It seems she was walking along, minding her own business, when she was simply shot because. . . I won't give it away.

In general, the whole story left me cold. Dane Lassiter . . . he's a hero? We hear how his first wife was unfaithful to him, was cold to him, etc. etc. What a terrible person she was. Then, as we read further in the story, and we hear how he treated her - well, I simply see her side, totally. I see her side more than I see his side. And the relationship between Dan and Tess - he treated her badly before, which is why she is now afraid of him. Okay, I can understand (barely) why he did that, but what I don't see is any kind of real apology, an understanding of how badly he hurt her. . . I would never give such a person a second chance. Or, if I would, he sure blew it. Okay, I hurt you, but it's my mothers fault! I don't like people who blame other people for their problems. Also - why did she have to work for him, if she was scared of him? Don't tell me there were no other jobs available? He couldn't have been paying her THAT well!

I generally rate a book on four things - how well it's written, character development, originality and complexity of the plot, and sympathetic characters. This book deserves one star - Tess is really sweet.

I see from the reviews that Diana Palmer has alot of fans, but it seems they were looking for something very different than I was. This was the first book that I read by this author, and it's obvious that my taste and her style don't mesh. However, Diana Palmer has a lot of fans, and it's just my opinion!
