4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not comprehensive, May 29, 2005
This review is from: Case in Point: Complete Case Interview Preparation: Third Edition (Paperback)
I think this book is much better then the vault preparation book, and the cases are more sensible and detailed. It's certainly a good book. However, I would use other sources as well, especially because different firms have different interview styles. I have just been accepted to McKinsey as an associate and their interview style was not similar to the one in the book, although the book did help. I recommend using all the interactive cases you can find in MercerMC, McKinsey, BCG, Wetfeet and Bain websites and then this book and something more, preferably 'Crack the Case'.

Good luck!
Yuval

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this one..., June 29, 2005

EXCELLENT book. A must-have piece for anyone who is (1) either anticipating an interview or (2) simply considering their possible entry into the world of management consulting. In his work, Cosentino not only provides the best - and most realistic - prepatory tool for case interviewing available on the market, he also provides the best overview of the industry at large, including all that which it demands of its participants. If you are preparing for an interview next year, next month or tomorrow, buy this book. If you are, as yet, still trying to decide if management consulting is "for you", buy this book. Case In Point is of equally invaluable necessity in either regard. No other book offers as realistic a feel for what management consulting `really' entails and, since self-selection comprises 80% of any ultimate hiring "decision", that is the more important groundwork with which all candidates must concern themselves. That critical self-analysis is, by far, best facilitated by Cosentino's book over the drier competitor approaches which lack his perspective, humor, and overall relevance. If you buy other books as well, you will find yourself as I did, only returning to Cosentino's cases as the freshest, most comprehensive and comprehensible - indeed the only ones you'll need for the most efficient and exhaustive preparation and self-analysis.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource, February 23, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Case in Point: Complete Case Interview Preparation: Third Edition (Paperback)
Having recently accepted a position with a leading management and technology consulting firm, I can honestly say that Case in Point was an invaluable resource when preparing for the interview process. The Ivy Case System provided a structured approach and thought process that could be applied to the wide variety of questions that I faced during the interview process. Thank you Mr. Cosentino for developing the Ivy Case System and writing such an insightful book. It was immensely helpful in returning to a career in consulting and I am confident that the techniques that I learned for evaluating business situations will be helpful in my daily work.

5.0 out of 5 stars ARM YOURSELF - do NOT attempt an interview without this one, May 24, 2005

This review is from: Case in Point: Complete Case Interview Preparation: Third Edition (Paperback)
My advice is if you buy only one book in your case interview process, make it Case in Point. If your aim is, as mine was, to succeed at the highest levels of the management consulting interview process, its an endeavor which will prove unnecessarily difficult without this particular resource.

Of all the overwhelming number of guides on the market, Case in Point is by far the best: the most practical, the most useful and the easiest to comprehend. In a lucid fashion derived from invaluable and unique experience (years grooming generations of successful case interviewers at Harvard), Marc Cosentino presents a one-stop shopping in a prepatory guide which easily allows any candidate to succeed in that which will ultimately prove both the most difficult and most important interview of their lives. With humor and balance, Cosentino entertains and courts the reader not only into a comprehension but into an essential appreciation for the `case interview' craft. Cosentino's book is clearly lengths ahead of the pack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably the least bad of all case books out there, April 21, 2008

This review is from: Case in Point: Complete Case Interview Preparation: Third Edition (Paperback)
A book will never really tell you what it's like to be in a real case interview, but this one is the least bad of all books that I've read. Forget about crack-the-case, wet-feet, vault etc. If you only want to get one, get this one. Then try to get your hands on the prep books of the MBA schools. The MIT/Sloan and UMich ones are pretty good.

How did my interviews go? Got offers from McKinsey, Bain, BCG and a couple of others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cover-to-Cover MUST READ!!, April 22, 2004

This review is from: Case in Point: Complete Case Interview Preparation: Third Edition (Paperback)
Marc Cosentino's third edition of 'Case in Point' is a veritable boon for candidates preparing for case interviews with consulting firms. It provides much needed guidance in getting ready for the case interview in general, and then exhaustively covers strategies for mastering potential case scenarios.

Cosentino presents the elegant Ivy Case System as a solid framework for confidently handling eleven different types of cases including both strategy and operations scenarios. The cases themselves are quite absorbing and diverse, ranging from increasing sales and growth at Starbucks to pricing a new long-lasting light bulb from GE. The material on the Ivy Case System is complemented by discussions of other business frameworks that are in use today. A detailed set of around forty sample cases, both current and archival, along with a complete listing of suggested approaches and responses immensely help the reader in building confidence and in mastering the art and science of the case interview. The book also includes a compilation of recent case questions from top-tier consulting firms and a section on consulting buzzwords for the uninitiated.

Superbly written in an easy conversational tone, the book is also very economically priced. A cover-to-cover MUST READ if you are preparing for a case interview. Certainly, the best book on case interview preparation available today.
