This review is from: A Case of Spirits: A Sergeant Cribb Investigation (Kindle Edition)
This is a short (almost novella length), fun read. This book had me laughing out loud. In terms of silliness, it's sort of halfway to Wodehouse, with the same jabs at social class distinctions. Some of the plot elements are frankly incredible, but due to the light tone of the book, you just go with it.
In Victorian London, a new spirit medium, Peter Brand, is being investigated by the LADS (Life After Death Society) and courted by bored society ladies. This necessitates a series of seances where deadly serious "scientists" put Brand to the test while others around the table see things, throw things and take the opportunity to tease their lovers. When a seance ends in murder, Sergeant Cribb investigates, being careful not to look too clever so as not to upstage his befuddled superior, Inspector Jowett. Highly recommended to break the tension on a stressful day (and boy did I need it -- a minor car repair turned out to be -- well, let's just say if this book hadn't had me laughing out loud I would've been sobbing out loud). |
