2.0 out of 5 stars Not so wonderful as everybody told
I have read the book and it is a formal structured discourse about how to do business cases.
For academic researchers who have never been in a company, it can be helpful. But I have found it a little bit incomplete for those researchers who work in the arena, who have real contact with the companies.

Any way, another link between the academic world and...

This book offers a very complete and detailed guide into conducting case study research, which is not only useful for researchers in social sciences, but also for business research. It is virtually the only book on case study research at this level and practically helps researchers that are planning to conduct case study research to avoid the pitfalls that are luring for this complex and difficult research strategy/design and which pitfalls have made the case study approach not so popular in the academic community that deals with business research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent work on case study methodology, August 3, 2005
This review is from: Case Study Research: Design and Methods, Third Edition, Applied Social Research Methods Series, Vol 5 (Paperback)
This book is perhaps the prime book for those conducting case studies for qualitative research in the social sciences. People have developed PhD methodology entirely based on the contents of this book. The third edition contains updated material and up-to-date citations and case study examples.

I would recommend this very highly to anyone using case studies in graduate-level social science research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading for using case studies in research, June 1, 2006

This review is from: Case Study Research: Design and Methods, Third Edition, Applied Social Research Methods Series, Vol 5 (Paperback)
Case studies are very powerful yet often abused way of conducting research. Its often abused because the researcher or student does not know what constitutes good case study research.

Yin's book is a unique combination of academically sound process and techniques that are presented in a way that non-academics can read and understand.

Yin makes the use of case studies and examples in more than 30 boxes that clearly illustrate the concepts and their application.

This book is mandatory for anyone looking to conduct and use case studies to prove and make their point.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for scientists, under- or graduate students, September 8, 2003

Read it to prepare for my master's thesis and probably will use it for my doctoral thesis as well. Brings the detailed methodology for case study research in perfectly synchronized chapters. Extremely valuable information! Sometimes even Mr. Yin has so many info to provide he has some difficulty putting it all together, but after all everything makes a lot of sense. Has dozens of very good examples. I am purchasing "Applications of case study research" (the "sequel") because I was really satisfied for what I got in reading Case Study Reasearch (3rd ed).

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful for such a small book, June 15, 2008
This review is from: Case Study Research: Design and Methods, Third Edition, Applied Social Research Methods Series, Vol 5 (Paperback)
I was a bit surprised at the small size of the book, but it makes up for it in content. Currently an MBA student who needed some guidance on the specific nature of doing case study research for a research methodology course assignment. Highly recommended by the lecturer and the text is very helpful in outlining the differences in the approach needed for case studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource, March 29, 2008
This review is from: Case Study Research: Design and Methods, Third Edition, Applied Social Research Methods Series, Vol 5 (Paperback)
This book is an excellant resource for qualitative research. It is written logically and is easy to follow. In particular, the sections on case study design, how to address validity and reliability, and justification of methods are very helpful. But it and plan to keep it as a reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read book on case research, March 20, 2008
This review is from: Case Study Research: Design and Methods, Third Edition, Applied Social Research Methods Series, Vol 5 (Paperback)
If you only read one book about case research, here it is. This book has become a classic for any academic interested in case research. It comes with a second volume which covers the application of the theory.

I needed to determine if case study research was for me. I'm in the process of selecting my dissertation methodology. If you only read one work regarding case study research this should be it. Yin is probably cited more frequently than any other author in the field. This work really covers the waterfront and can serve as a guidebook to one wishing to engage in case study research.

This book should be considered the bible of case studies; it is written for the novice researcher. This book (bible) will save you a lot of stress!

5.0 out of 5 stars Case Study, October 25, 2008

Both books that I have received that are written by Robert Yin helped me immensely in re-writing my methods section in my dissertation. Since I was new to case study research and this section was the major flaw in my dissertation, it helped me complete an intelligible and methodologically correct research design and methods section. Excellent compliment to all of the case study research books by Robert Yin.
