Book Description

January 1996 American Casebooks
In five years since the seventh edition of this book was published, a number of significant decisions have been handed down and a wealth of scholarly commentary has been generated. Accordingly, this new edition represents a complete revision and a fresh reevaluation, for purposes of re-editing and re-organizing, of all existing materials. It also constitutes the product of an extensive examination of the recent literature - in an effort to further enrich the notes, comments and questions. In addition to full updating, restructuring has been undertaken where called for by recent developments.

The most significant revisions appear in Chapter 3 (Separation of Powers). Chapter 4 (State Power to Regulate), Chapter 13 (Limitations on Judicial Review), and parts of Chapter 10 (Equal Protection) dealing with Affirmative Action (Sec. 2, VI), Discriminations Based on Gender (Sec. 3), and Special Scrutiny for Other Classifications (Sec. 4).

1.0 out of 5 stars Run for the hills, February 16, 2005
This review is from: Cases on Constitutional Law (American Casebooks) (Hardcover)
This is definitely the worst casebook I have come across so far. It weighs a ton too. You absolutely need to buy a supplement if you want to understand anything. A huge amount of space is devoted to notes and comments most of which are meaningless and incomprehensible to most 1Ls. As someone already said, if you can avoid this book, you're lucky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the casual reader..., December 15, 2003
By A Customer
We used this book for two semesters of Constitutional Law at law school. Even so we covered less than half of it. It is not easy reading but when used with other study aids or Lexis the cases become more clear.

If you are looking at this for law school purposes you probably don't have a choice. For those of you who are non students just looking for a book on constitutional law I would not recommend it. It is just too dense. Guess that is why it is used in a teaching environment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Casebook, January 24, 2006
I too have used this book for two semesters of Con Law. In my opinion it is the absolute worst casebook I have ever had to use.

The comments after the cases do nothing to clarify anything and frankly as a 1L you will be too busy reading for all your other classes you won't have time to read the 50 pages of comments after every case anyway.

If you have to use this casebook, you'd better hope that you get a good professor or at least get Gilberts/Emanuel!
