Over the years, American Idol performers have come and pretty much gone. Even the title of American Idol has never been a guarantee of quality music. How many winners do you still buy? The ones that have come in second have often done better than the winners! Adam Lambert is a great example - Clay Aiken is another.

Then along comes a kid that just blows it away. Talent is a funny thing. It does not always fit in a little box with a bow and get a label that says "Pop" or "Country". Enter Casey Abrams. Steeped in the language of music this kid hit all the right notes - every time. His playing skills set a very high bar for American Idol. His determination to perform what he feels, rather than what a coach says is a better choice, Casey Abrams hit it. Nature Boy - BRILLIANT.

Casey may not play the pop label but if you want to listen to talent - this is your guy. His first album is not only better than most, it allows him to have FUN. You can HEAR it! He may never have fit in the AI image of what a singer needs to be in today's market, but this kid has an undeniable talent.

Of the releases over the years, this is the best that AI has spawned in my opinion.

I hope his next album will go more to the jazzy, sultry and fun romps with classics that cry out to be heard again.

BRILLIANT KID!

I watched American Idol for years and was blown away by Casey's talent. Vocally he's out of this world, and his sense of musicality and ability to play w/ and interpret melodies actually made me love music even more than I already do (which is saying something). But what impressed me most was his willingness to take risks w/ the music he created- stepping out of the pop mold and challenging his audience to work a little harder, listen a little more carefully. This album has some nice moments (I esp like Great Bright Morning) but overall it strikes me as sometimes thoughtful pop music. Don't get me wrong, I like pop music and if it were anyone else I would be satisfied w/ this, but I guess I am missing the risks and imagination. No way his youtube posts from stuff he did in high school (Lullaby of a Birdland) should be so much better than his album. Maybe the people at Concord need to listen to those again. It should be mentioned that his best moments w/ the melodies are w/ Haley on their cover of Hit the Road Jack. Also, some of his acoustic versions posted to youtube are big improvements on these songs (esp blame it on me). Wore out my soul would seem to have potential not tapped into during production. When he tours I hope I can catch an acoustic set.

UPDATE: So his youtube performances of the album - esp ones marked 'live in San Diego' are truly inspired....I'll say I wish the actual album had this stripped down- improvisational feel--- but whatever, I'll take it where I can get it-- AMAZING JOB-- they are 5 star-- can't wait to see him perform this album live!!!!

This cd is a eclectic mix of folk, pop, jazz and even a hint of country. The songs are melodic and catchy and not generic. I find there is a great individualism about almost all the tracks. Yet, the album is still cohesive. Plus, the cd isn't slick or produced within an inch of it's life as is much of music these days.

A few highlights: Dry Spell with Jamie Cullum on piano is a really cool and terrific jazz/pop tune as is Blame on Me. The musical chemistry between Casey and Haley Reinhart is still going strong as evident on Hit The Road Jack. Ghosts has a wonderful arrangement-unique and breezy--so good. Great Bright morning is very pretty with some sweet harmonies. Midnight girl is another lovely crafted song.

Casey Abrams co-wrote all the songs and plays a number of instruments besides the bass on the album. He's the real deal.

I highly recommend this cd!!!

Amazing, diverse, extremely catchy, melodic and often complex album. I'm already singing along to his songs. For $9.99 it's worth every cent; this album is bursting with rich musical goodness. Casey Abrams is the kind of album where each listen brings something new to be admired, in other words it never gets old, which is another way of saying, it's addictive!

Stand out songs on first listen, for me personally, are Blame it on Me (a real toe tapper), Wore Out My Soul (a song free to interpretation. I like it as a song about shoes :) ), A Boy Can Dream (plays out like a movie, it's devastatingly beautiful), Ghosts (super catchy and amazing harmonies) and Dry Spell (just straight up groovy, jammin, crazy amazing shit). But really, every song on Casey Abrams has its own lane and when it comes down to it, good music is good music. So even though many fans expected, and wanted, a jazzier deal I can't complain against good music. And let's not forget it's his first album release under a label and he's a young gun at 21 with some serious musical skills that extend beyond the boundaries of many musical genres. I look forward to see how he develops musically. (And I know I wrote music/musically like a hundred times in that paragraph but I'm not trying too hard to sound all critical and smart cause music's all about emotion and enjoyment after all)

All in all, Casey Abrams is simply a breathe of fresh air and will most definitely put a smile on your face :)
