Editorial Reviews

Boston-based teenage singer/songwriter Casey Desmond is the daughter of a pair of local noise rock legends who front the performance art freakout collective the Bentmen. However, in much the same way that Dweezil Zappa's pop-metal never had that much to do with his dad's knotty blend of cerebral art and knob jokes, Casey Desmond's own music is unapologetically commercial pop. A pretty redhead who looks like a fashion-updated version of Claire Danes circa My So-Called Life, Desmond makes a kind of approachable but not overly slick semi-alternative pop for teenage girls who are too cool for Kelly Clarkson but not cool enough for Feist: the guitars are fully amped-up, and Desmond sings her folk-rock-based songs with enough spunk that "Taste It" sounds more like Juliana Hatfield than Jewel and the harder-rocking "Sorry Ain't Enough" comes across like Melissa Etheridge with a less sandpapery voice. A few writing sessions with a seasoned production/writing team and Casey Desmond could easily make a commercial pop record as good as Liz Phair's post-millennium work; whether she has anything deeper in her is a question unanswered by this entirely charming but lightweight debut. ~ Stewart Mason

5.0 out of 5 stars You are missing out if you don't hear this!!!, February 8, 2006

Casey has been a gifted musician for her entire life. She has worked hard to accomplish everything she has so far, and her efforts are well worth a listen to. She has an incredible voice that should not be missed. Casey has a unique voice that cannot be pinpointed as replicating someone else's sound, she is truly one of a kind. Five out of five, but if I could I'd go even higher than that, it's worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Break Out Ain't Enough / Radio Programmers take Notice!, December 6, 2005
This review is from: Casey Desmond (Audio CD)
Wow! 19 and already out with her 3rd effort. 11 of the 13 tracks are written by Casey, the other two are co-written by her. Casey has grown up surrounded by some of Boston's finest rock musicians her whole life. Yet here on this disc there is not a hint of the influences that must have surrounded her. That's not a bad thing. It proves to this writer that Casey is a true original. This woman has recorded a disc that's aimed straight for the stars.
The 13 tracks on her self titled release come straight from the heart and obviously from life experiences. Here can be heard the passions running the gambit from the power pop angst of (dare I say it, but she really was great) Pat Benatar...and Casey's pipes are just ephing amazing...well, I don't know who to compare her to for you to relate.
I remember the first time I heard Susan Tedeschi, another Boston gal, I thought man she's the next Bonnie Raitt. But I was wrong, she's not following, she's leading the way. I say Casey's headed down that path too!
She's writing about the topics that all young adults go through or will soon go through. "Asked me to be the suture in your side But it's puss filled and it's all bloody, I don't wanna be that honey" This ain't no prefab hollywood cookie cutout like most acts on commercial radio.
That said taking a peak at the liner notes of Casey Desmod's disc I see someone who has major belief that she's good enough for the pros already...and she is. Most notably Tony Levin (King Crimson, sidekick to countless including Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Herbie Mann and James Taylor to name a few) joins her on bass. Also Will Ackerman (founder of Windham Hill records)co-writes one and plays on two tracks. Notorious Boston rockers Bill and Kathy Desmond (Bentmen) play on and produce the disc.
The disc is solid through and through with multiple layers of emotion and sounds to satisfy many a rock audience.
Keep an eye out for this gal, she's going to break out, but I'm betting it won't be enough. Three records by nineteen, she's evolving.
The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the one thing I think these songs need is a blistering lead guitar to accompany her kick ass voice. It's an excellent disc by itself, but it could have been searing. Of course I haven't seen her live so I have no idea really. Maybe when she comes to North Carolina I'll get a chance to find out.
