Editorial Reviews

Review

Zimring goes beyond the limited historical literature on municipal solid wastes. Cash for Your Trash gives us a sweeping account of industrial recycling long before residential recycling became popular. It is a fine contribution to urban and environmental history.

This one is a prize in the sense that this info was recorded just before a lot of it disappeared.

The scrap business is changing radically due to big corporate ownership and the old family scrapyards are almost all being vacuumed up by the big boys. This book caught a lot of the info that would have been gone when there were no more scrap familiy members to tell the tale.

It has a great history of why you're a social outcast as scrap hauler. It's a tradition that goes way back.
Having been in the business for a while I can tell you a lot of the haulers still give the public good reason to hate them.

Another interesting angle here is the progress made in how steel was melted.
As time went on less and less raw scrap was needed to make steel. Definitely a problem if you supply scrap.

If you have any interest in scrap you'll enjoy this one.

Amazingly done. The book illustrates fully the complexity of the society: its evolution, conflict, opportunities. Waste concerns everyone, this book is on scrap industry, but it gave also a bigger perspective on the macro level at major social-political events (WWI, WWII, US immigration policies, etc.)

This book was a descent read for me. It shows how far we have gone since the beginning of recycling. Great history on how this industry came about. I recommend it for anyone who wants to make some money in the recycling business.
