I read a review of this saddle in The Horse Journal. It has been a source of valuable information on products for my horse habit for many years. The Journal stated that their was a place in the barn for this saddle, so based on their information and my previous experience with Cashel products, I bought it. I have a young molly mule with a very straight back and I thought it might be a good starter saddle for her. And, I like to trail ride in a bareback pad and this seemed like it might be a little more, and just right.

Tried it out today for the first time. This is what I love:
1. It is super light.
2. It is a bareback pad, but more.
3. it is easy to clean.
4. It has lots of rings for attaching breast collars, cruppers, etc.
5. it is super cushy.
6. It has stirrups with it.
7. It uses a western girth.
8. It appears that this saddle distributes the weight of the rider better than a plain bareback pad.

And here is what I don't like:
1. It is difficult to make the stirrups even because they don't have holes, they slide like the adjustments on a sheet or blanket.
2. It is difficult to tighten it enough to keep it from slipping. I used a tacky pad under it, but it never seemed to be secure. I used a mounting block, which helped, but there aren't mounting blocks in the woods, and I ride a really tall mare. In other saddles I can successfully bounce up without dislodging a properly fitting saddle.
3. The super cushy-ness means there is a lot of foam between you and the horse. I like a close feel, so this could be a learning curve, or a real negative. Perhaps better on my trotting horse than my gaited horse?
4. I was not sure about fit.

I love my Cashel G2 soft saddle. My saddle is new and to sit in it for the first time was a dream come true for comfort. I am well into my senior years and have serious back and neck issues and the wrong saddle can create pain instantly ... not so with my G2. I no longer can lift my previous saddle and with the G2 weighing only six pounds I can now saddle my own horse. No longer dependent on others for assistance, my gaited Rocky Mountain mare and I are free spirits. I knew the workmanship would be excellent as I have purchased many things from Cashel over the years and never had an issue with any. I also have to share the fact that everyone at Cashel is kind, caring and puts the horse and rider safety and comfort first and foremost.

I bought this saddle for an upcoming camping trip with my horse to the beach. I do not want to ruin my expensive leather tack in the salt water so I bought this specifically for that reason. I was very pleasantly surprised when I rode in it for the first time. I felt very secure and comfortable which I hadn't expected from a saddle that is essentially a bareback pad. I used a tacky saddle pad liner and mounted from a mounting block (I always do) so I had no problems with the saddle slipping. If you mount from the ground I would expect it to slip some. It did not slip at all when I dismounted. The quality of the saddle seems good and it is well made but I have not had it very long. I will update this review as time goes on but the only negative aspect I could see at this point are the stirrups. They seem to be the weak link and would be the first to break. There is ample padding between the rider and horse so that you don't feel the withers or backbone but you really feel the horse under you. It is so light, it was amazing that it was so comfortable and being as light as a feather.

Liked the looks of it when I took it out of the box and looks to be well put together, but was disappointed because it only fits one of my horses (I do not recommend this saddle if you have a very short backed horse)

Some years ago I got the Cashel Soft Saddle. I LOVE that saddle. I used it every time I rode for the last, I think at least 7 years. Alas, nothing lasts forever. It began to crack and flatten out a bit so I decided to get a replacement. Of course I wanted the same great saddle so I called the Cashel company and was informed that they moved their manufacturing plant and no longer have the room to keep making the soft saddle I was looking for. I then decided I would try the G2. Well, it is not a close contact soft saddle as I expected. It is more like a dressage saddle with the longer sides and places you in a more dressage like position. I have a 13 year old quarter horse and the G2 fit him very well. I however do not like how thick and stiff the G2 is. I was unable to give him the signals I usually do with my feet and legs because of the thickness of the sides.
I am sending this back and will continue to look for a soft saddle like the Cashel G1.
On a positive note, it seems to be very well made and sturdy. This is no surprise I have always like the Cashel product workmanship.
