Vermont goat-herding may not sound like material for a gripping mystery, but in Comfort's ( Grave Consequences ) hands, it achieves that dimension. The fifth Tish McWhinny mystery finds the spry septuagenarian resident of southern Vermont looking on in horror as her adoptive niece Sophie begins plans to breed cashmere goats. Right after the expensive stud arrives, Sophie leaves for Texas and asks Tish to help watch the goats until her return. Soon, Tish finds Sophie's neighbor Stu Simpson bludgeoned to death with a golf club--and the prize stud gone. Despite repeated warnings from the local police lieutenant, Tish questions local farmers about the location of the missing stud, until she too is in danger. Eschewing excessive detail about goats and their breeding, Comfort portrays a delightful and believable cast of characters, especially down-to-earth Tish and her crusty gentleman friend Hilary Oats.

The hardcover introduction to a plucky 70-ish Vermont widow, Tish McWhinny; her pug Lulu; and her honorary niece Sophie, who's just purchased some ramshackle acreage--``Goat Heaven''-- as well as a seven-thousand-dollar cashmere buck (``William the Conqueror''). Someone then kidnaps the buck, whose disappearance coincides with the murder of Sophie's neighbor, Stu Simpson. Tish, aided and abetted by her good chum Hil, a crusty, 80-year-old widower, and Sophie's brother Sandy, is soon up to her arthritic knees in suspects--and trouble: her path collides with toxic-waste dumpers, a goat-lift scam artist, nude frolickers in the barn, panners for gold, as well as the murderer, who will kill again before Tish explains all to everyone's (but the reader's) satisfaction. Animal lovers will probably adore it, and Tish, who's survived four previous paperback adventures, makes a likable heroine-- despite serious plot deficiencies. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. _ A good book for a rainy day, perfect for a peaceful read,

The Cashmere Kid is quite entertaining reminding me of a popular t.v. mystery show. I found this book perfect to curl up with and completely forget about the real world for a while. Don't want to give the story away, but I can recomend this book as something delightful and different.
