Editorial Reviews

Review

“Green has a fantastic new entry in this series, with his trademark cameos and shout-outs to his own work and many other pop-culture touchstones, all building to a shattering climax where it all comes down to one decision. By contrast, the reader’s decision is easy: Buy this book. Recommended.”—SFRevu

“An eerie and imaginative new adventure. Green blends Lovecraftian mystery with the world building power of H. G. Wells, adding his own flair to create a quick-witted, fast-paced story...a cracking good emotional read.”—RT Book Reviews

I've been a fan of Simon Green's books for quite a few years. He writes some of the best villains around, and his heroes are bold, snarky, funny and prone to violence. His books are just absolutely reliable if you're looking for a good adventure in a vividly described world.

This particular installment of the Secret Histories series had some of the best characters from some of his other series including Bruin Bear and the Sea Goat. If you haven't read many of his books and series, they are recurrent characters who have been in both his fantasy and science fiction books. There is also one of my favorite characters from Nightside.

This book had a lot more pop culture references than usual. I think in one case, he repeated a joke from a previous book. It was still a lot of fun and the references fit Eddie Drood's character. One American tv show reference had me laughing so hard that I had to explain myself to my daughter. Molly Metcalf is one of the best female characters he's ever written as a love interest. This series is also notable because there is a fair amount of character introspection, but it's paced well with lots of action filled scenes that are meticulously described.

I do recommend starting at the beginning of any of his series. They can stand alone, but they are much better with back story.
If you like really fun action filled cross genre stories with fantastic elements, these fit the bill nicely. I think it would make a wonderful tv show, movie or comic book as well. It has that kind of feel to it.

I have a tough time explaining this series to people, but if I can get them to read it, they thank me. Sort of a Secret Agent meets super science and magic. I have tried to pinpoint the reason I like these books so much, and the easy answer is; they are just a lot of fun. Casino Infernale, is no exception. Funny quips abound with death and mayhem as Shaman Bond and Motty Metcalf proceed to take on the biggest Bank/Casino of all time.

With some surprise guests from the Ghostfinders crew, the Nightside, and Shadows Fall, this book is a great read for a fan of any of Simon R Green's series.

I have been reading Simon R. Green for years. I loved the take on this Eddie Drood/Shaman Bond mission. The books are getting better, I sincerely hope that Shaman is with us for a long time.

After a mission to the dark islands of Scotland, Eddie and Molly are called back the Drood hall to save the world again. After Crowe Lees death there has been rumors of his Inheritance and everyone wants it so bad that everyone is ready to bring on the Secret Wars to the public. The plan, take on the Shadow Bank and limit its influence in the shadows so no one will have money to bring on the expected wars. From the Ruins on Mars to the infamous Casio Infernale, Eddie and Molly go forth to do what they do best beat the odds. But how can they when Eddie does not even have his armour to protect him?

This story starts a little slower than the other books, but when the story hits it stride it really get in. With the usual wit, humor and underlying danger that you come to expect from the series you can expect that this book will beat the odds and become a good read. Simon Green rarely fails and this book continues his streak of popular titles. I can not wait for the next one in the series to come out.

The series keeps on going without falling flat. Get ALL the books and read them in order. There are at lease 2 more books after this. I have the next one sitting next to me and will have it read in 3 days.

I have truly enjoyed a good many of Simon Greens novels. But, something happens to this man, and his writing, when he is called upon to examine male/female relations. The first few chapters of this book were filled with an insufferable amount of ridiculous "romantic banter" between Eddie and Molly. It was stilted and painful, every single interaction filled with smart ass comments to each other, I was rolling my eyes so much, my husband thought I was having a stroke. I mean, we get it, Eddie and Molly not taking any crap, from anyone (finger snap) especially not each other! It was incredibly one dimensional, and quite sad. (Same thing happened with the night side novels) Sad to say, I could not get past their trite and tired exchanges. I quit after a few chapters. It was unrealistic and made me dislike the characters, as they descended into being caricatures of a sassy strong female and her wisecracking beau. No thanks.
