Product Description

Casio CW-K85 features a computer-like keyboard for stand alone operation when printing a titles on CD or DVD discs. A USB cable is also included for easy hook-up to a PC. The PC software includes five fonts, 650 symbols, step-by-step help and numerous templates. The printer can display 12 characters x 1 line data input and illustrates the CD-R, DVD layout. Any True type fonts are available via bundled software. The print format for the CW-K85 consists of 18 alpha-numeric formats and four graphic formats that you can select from. The CW-K85 is a thermal printer with a print area measuring 5/8? x 2 15/16.? You can print up to 16 lines on a standard CD-R. The disc-title printer is powered by 8 ?AA? size batteries or an optional AC adapter. I record our church services on CD and DVD and bought this printer to print 'labels' for the disc's. Knowing that I would be using it quite a bit, I also purchased the 'optional' AC adapter.
Other than the unit is a little slow in printing, I truly like it. The one thing I find odd, however, is the use of the 'shift' key. On this keyboard, to use the shift key to capitalize a letter, you push and release the shift key, then type your letter. If you hold the shift key and type your letter, you get nothing. Strange.....
I have seen some reviews for this and the Casio CW-75 that complain about the top and bottom lines of print not being properly aligned. That is purely operator error. If your eyeballs are on crooked and you can't see straight, Casio provides a device for lining up the top and bottom print. Me, personally, I thought it was a waste of time, and (most) my discs are lined up fine.
I print top and bottom for all my discs and I purposely kept track through one ribbon to see how many it would print. I got 31 discs printed on one ribbon. That's about 23 cents per disc. For the results you get with a minimum of hassle, I think it's well worth it.
Some have complained that this device won't print on all discs. To that I say, DUUHHH!!! When you read the item description, it does say it is a thermal printer! Buy thermal print discs and you will have no problem. I have never had any of my CD's or DVD's have any kind of problem with the print. I buy for price with my discs (and so far haven't any problems with recording or copying either, knock on wood). Have used several different manufacturers with no printing problem at all.
I say, if you want a stand-alone printer for your discs, this is a great buy. AND, I have been using mine for about a year, printing between 8 to 15 discs every weekend. Just be sure to get the adapter!!

I presently own two of the Casio Model CW-50 disc title printers. I just ordered the CW-K85. I have 3 computers, 2 running xp and the third vista. I found the CW-50's to work well on XP, but their was no software update to allow the units to run on vista. No one ever blogs about this, and Casio did not return my email queries about a possible Vista driver upgrade. I am buying a Casio printer with a keyboard that I can use at my Vista Computer as a stand alone printer.

I can speak pretty highly of these machines. They make a clear label that will not come off (thermal). Ink ribbon cassettes are sold in a 3 pack that costs about $20. The three ribbons will give you 120 titles, or 40 each. I use some of the different scripts but I haven't gotten clever with designs. I create simple titles for my favorite shows or home DVD's.

I am looking forward to receiving my CW-K85 and hope it is Vista ready. If it is not, well, thats the reason I bought one with a keyboard.

A word about discs. TDK, Sony and Fuji make discs that have a lot of room to print on. There is writing on either side of center and its silver so your title stands out. These are really good quality discs so you get fewer errors. Memorex would not copy anything for me. I tried a 20 pack of DVD+R's and they all stopped because of read/write errors.
HP makes a great disc as well but its hard to print on because of the design and color. These machines work best on a satin silver disc. I have also been advised that cheaper discs will not work at all, like the Memorex experience. Save your money and buy Fuji, TDK, or Sony discs.

I find that this printer works fine with CDs and DVDs that aren't pre-printed with heavy ink from the manufacturer. A nice "hand-writing" substitute when used as a stand-alone device, but really shines when used with the included software. I got mine for $30 on sale. Battery life is moderate to poor.
