This is one of those time proven classic watches that is hard to sum up in a short review. The DW=6600 is indeed a terrific, durable watch with exactly the right combination of features for a wide range of needs. Unfortunately the model 1V has added a big red "G" for G-Shock right in the middle of the blue display. This makes the display unreadable for many angles. This is especially a problem if you wear your watch on the "inside" of your wrist. If you can...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, May 5, 2008

This is one of those time proven classic watches that is hard to sum up in a short review. The DW-6600 just happens to be the longest running G-Shock in production, without any real updates to the design. The DW-6600 that you buy today will be nearly identical to the DW-6600 you purchased in 1994. There are very few watches in the industry that are good enough to survive 14 years of production without change.

The odd twist to this watch's long running heritage is that most of the DW-6600's made in 1994 are probably still running strong, with just a battery change. This watch has a toughness of legendary proportions. And if the watch does ever start to show its age, spare straps, bezels and gaskets can be ordered cheaply through the Casio Service Center. Strap adapters are even available to convert over to a one-piece dive strap. If that weren't enough, steel face protectors can be ordered to further increase the watch's durability. The DW-6600 is a regular "tour de force". It's no wonder that the DW-6600 is a favorite of law enforcement, EMS, firefighters, and the military. The DW-6600 has even been officially issued to US Navy SEALs.

While this watch does not have many of the advanced features of newer model G-Shocks, the basic features that it does have are very well implemented, and simple to use. The "Target Time" feature is especially unique and quite useful. The LCD illumination of the DW-6600 is probably brighter than on any G-Shock ever made. Button protection is very good, while still allowing the buttons to be pressed fairly easily. One button press will hot-swap you between 12 hour time and military time.

If you are looking for something elegant and unassuming, you'd better run for your life right now. This is not a watch for dinner parties and eating small food from silver trays. Wearing a DW-6600, you'll look more at home at a roadhouse, fighting with the locals and spilling bear. The DW-6600 is an absolute beast of a watch, designed with layer upon layer of shock absorbing protection. If you want a watch that can take beating upon beating, and then ask for maybe a few more beatings, you've come to the right place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great watch, March 2, 2007
I wear this watch as my "beater." Although I own a couple of really nice watches, I'm in the Coast Guard, so I don't want to run the risk of bashing them up to the point that I wouldn't be able to wear them any longer. This G-Shock solves that work-related problem. Reliable, tough and keeps good time. Only thing I changed was removing the resin band with a significantly more comfortable (and probably longer-lasting) nylon Zulu band (County Comm sells the G-Shock adapters that allow installation).

My family has owned G-Shocks for years - since the mid 1980s - and though we've owned watches at the higher and lower end of the G-Shock scale, this watch is, ultimately, all one needs from a G-Shock. Rugged, easy to read and use, and aesthetically all G-Shock. I don't know that I'd take it over a Rolex, but I just might.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big and Tough, December 8, 2008
This review is from: Casio Men's DW6600C-1V G-Shock Classic Digital Watch (Watch)
When I bought my first Casio G-Shock in 1987, little did I know that I would still be wearing them twenty years later. This G-Shock is #4, and I can still remember the pride on my face when I got it. That watch was the biggest, toughest-looking one yet, and I ended up arguing with the owner of a competing brand over who had the best. Experience had taught me that this was the one I wanted for hard, outdoors work, play, or just show. A G-Shock means it can keep up with you, giving reliable time and useful functions. The most useful is a countdown timer. In fact, I've retired this watch to my kitchen, where it tracks several cooking times at once. And it is still running after ten years--no new battery. It's a great watch and will go with you everywhere.

As a Senior Administrator on an internet wristwatch forum [BDWF] - I responded to an appeal from one of our military members who requested to ours and other forums at the end of 2009 to gift wrist watches to the 7th SF Group and the 96th Civil Affairs Group out of Fort Bragg, NC. SF has rapdly expanded to meet worldwide demands and young soldiers need to do other things with their small salaries other than to purchase wrist watches.

Since I owned this watch model since 1994 and a prececessor model since 1989 - replacing 2 wrist straps and 3 batteries - it was easy to purchase/gift this along with another Casio Model to 'any Special Ops soldier' who needed one. As a retired soldier - I know first hand how rough field duty is on wrist watches - and this Casio met and exceeded any expectations I could ever have taking a wristwatch to the field.

Looking to the back of my watch box of over 50 timepieces I still treasure my Casio DW6600. Even after retiring out in 1996 - the watch has served me well in field duty as an Army contract employee for many years until being replaced by more expensive timepieces as my work environment became less demanding.

The bezel face has worn almost smooth - the printing of various function almost unreadable (Casio has offered to reface the watch - but I enjoy it as a piece of my past military history).

As the light was someting I needed to shield at night - and worried about sunlight glinting off the watch crystal in daylight - I wore this watch on a canvas strap with a velcro flap over the watchface - which somewhat protected it from wear and shielded accidendental light emissions at night.

It remains watertight (seals having been replaced - almost as expensive as a new purchase with a battery change) and constant use of the light will wear down the battery faster than you'd want - but I went 3-5 years between changes.

Not solar powered and NOT atomic timed - (as that is useless in most places our soldiers deploy to) it was a perfect gift to an unknown soldier going in harms way. May this watch see a SF soldier through his current assignment and safe return.

A watch that can be taken into harms way without worry.

For those looking for a great dive watch at a nominal cost, this is it. I have used this style watch for the last 5 or 6 years and I love them. The coolest feature is the "night light". In the middle of the night and I can't see the clock, I just press the button and I know what time it is. The only down side of the watch is the band. Maybe Casio could make a thicker or maybe a sturdier band. I've had two bands break on me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent watch lasts forever, August 3, 2009
This review is from: Casio Men's DW6600C-1V G-Shock Classic Digital Watch (Watch)
I bought one of these in 1994. I had to replace the battery after six years and am now on battery number 3. Only problem was had to replace the wristband and had some trouble getting a replacement. Got one now. Watch has survived diving, work on emergency relief and recovery operations and general poor treatment. All functions work well Countdown function is useful for diving. Ensure that you take it to a qualified repair shop when you replace the battery and if possible get it pressure tested so you know they did a proper job. Apart from that the only possible improvement would be make it solar.

5.0 out of 5 stars The #1 Watch For Working Men, February 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Casio Men's DW6600C-1V G-Shock Classic Digital Watch (Watch)
This is the all time, most rugged, durable watch you will ever own. Yes, it looks out of place at dinner parties. Where it looks at home is on your wrist while working out, running, repairing a greasy engine component in your car, or while out in the woods clearing trees and brush with a chain saw.

The G-Shock DW-6600 has all the components a man needs in a functional, everyday-wear watch. I have had one for well over 10 years and other than a battery replacement and a new band, is still trucking along doing exactly what it is supposed to do, and doing it accurately. I have an early G-Shock made in Indonesia (Japanese quartz movement) that has been a tank, enduring daily wear in a mechanics job, being exposed to bumps, scrapes, lubrication overspray, the shock of being on a wrist while pounding heavy objects with a hammer on a routine basis, and it is still a flawless time piece that amazes me with its accurate time keeping.

It does all this while remaining light on the arm. I have a stainless Seiko divers watch I wear rarely, mostly because its weight makes it so noticeable (also lacks features I use regularly that the G-Shock has). The DW-6600 with it resin case, band, and LCD display blends in as if it weren't there weight-wise.

I use the chronograph and count down timer frequently. The easy-to-find light button makes checking the time in pitch darkness a breeze. The buttons are sufficiently recessed and protected that you will never find any setting inadvertently changed no matter how vigorous the activity involved.

As a result of working for 30 years as a mechanic in various industrial jobs, I have found that no matter what kind of watch you have on, there is one design imperative that has to be considered...the crystal MUST be recessed, or as sure as the sun rises you will either scratch or damage the watch face, as I have many times with various other watches. This is another area where the DW-6600 shines, since its face is recessed WELL below the top surface.

Here's what I need to have in a watch so I know it will last - a durable, waterproof build, a recessed crystal, an accurate quartz movement, and the functionality I use routinely (chronograph and count down timer the most). The Casio DW-6600 has it, at a price that is well inside even the most frugal shoppers budget. You will not be disappointed with this main battle-tank of a time piece.
