5.0 out of 5 stars G-7700 review, March 9, 2009
I bought this watch a week ago at an unbeatable price of $47 incl. tax and shipping (almost 50% off the RRP). What I wanted was a watch that was useful for athletic training (I'm an avid runner and swimmer). What I received was a superb well-rounded G-Shock that surpassed my expectations regarding the purpose of the watch, one that has several unique features that other G-Shocks presently do not feature:
*1/1000 stopwatch with split and 999 lap time functions--perfect for athletic training, getting splits etc. while running or swimming.
*Auto-start feature--a 5 second countdown prior to starting the stopwatch, with cool animated graphics.
*2 100-hour countdown timers, adjustable to the second--ideal for interval training on long runs.
*Customizable alarms for weekend and weekday--great for people like me who have to wake up at 7am on weekdays and noon on weekends without having to constantly switch on/off different alarms.
*Customizable hourly signal--set it so that it only beeps on the hour during any specified period (ie. 7am-11pm), so that it doesn't beep while sleeping.
*Flash alert--red and green LEDs go off in sync with the alarms and stopwatch auto-start systems. With the stopwatch auto-start, the LEDs are employed to create a cool motor races effect by having red lights going off in sync with the countdown and green lights going off at the start itself.

Other features of the watch:
*World time in 48 cities--48 cities is new for me, previous G-Shocks only had 27 or so, perfect for frequent travelers like me.
*EL backlight (blue-green) with auto-EL function.
*A very comfortable strap with good fit, and a thin case (by G-Shock standards) makes for one of the most easy-to-wear G-Shocks ever.
*Buttons are extremely easy to push. Some users have complained that the "G" button on the front of the watch, which activates the EL backlight, is hard to press; that wasn't the case for me.

Some cons:
*EL backlight duration (1 second)--too short for me, especially on a display with so much information, presumably to increase battery life. 2 or 3 seconds would be ideal.
*Non-solar powered--given all the power-hungry features of this watch, solar power would be ideal, so as not to worry about running down the batteries with all the alarms, lights and all.

However, these are minor issues. I'm sure this watch would suit anyone out there--by far one of the most feature-packed yet comfortable-to-wear and stylish G-Shocks out there, perfect for any occasion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Takes a lickin'..., September 25, 2009
By
B. R. Kmack (New Orleans, LA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this watch from a local big box. Paid a fair price, but it is cheaper from this seller on amazon. I wear this watch everyday at home and at work as an offshore commercial diver. It has stood up to much abuse and harsh exposure. Everyday at work in the Gulf of Mexico, the watch is soaked in sea water and beaten regularly against all sorts of objects. I have dropped it numerous times onto a metal deck (from 4 feet or so), rubbed it accidentally against all manner of sharp or rough objects (the plastic "armor" really protects the crystal and buttons), and I have worn it while diving in the gulf numerous times. The watch has proved waterproof and resilient from surface all the way to 212 feet deep. I could not actually believe that it survived a mixed-gas dive to that depth along with all water decompression stops for a total time in water of over 2 hours! Pressure changes do not affect this watch. Besides surviving in the water, it has been just fine in the decompression chamber on deck.

Other reviewers can testify to the functions of this watch far better than I. I know how to work the stopwatch function and keep the time set correctly. I bought this piece simply to stand up to my job and it has.

For a true commercial diver's watch, look no further than the GShock.

Dive safe.

3.0 out of 5 stars G7700 for Running/Endurance Workouts, October 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Decided to purchase a G-Shock after going through a few Timex Ironman models over the last few years, which never seemed to last that long (LCD display on one, watchband on another - which is integrated with the timepiece on that model and can't be replaced, making the watch unwearable when the band breaks - and most recently, the stopwatch function intermittently stopping on another).
The Casio G-Shock line has a good reputation for durability, and this particular model (G7700-1) is a good watch at a good price, and I do like it. A couple of things to note, though, especially for those planning to use it during running/endurance workouts and considering a switch from the various Ironman models:
1) The button to illuminate the face, although marked with a cool "G", is relatively difficult to depress - a bit too small and recessed. And when you do depress it, the face illuminates very briefly. This probably helps extend battery life, but for those who find themselves doing their workouts a lot in the dark, either in the early morning or evening, you will likely want to use the illumination function often enough to find it inconvenient, especially in comparison to the various Ironman models, which usually have larger buttons for this and stay illuminated a bit longer.
2) The interval timer function allows a cycle of two different intervals in sequence, but once set up, will only repeat the cycle 5 times. For those who like to use an interval timer for run/walk intervals, speed work, etc., this is simply not enough. I've taken to carrying one of my old Timex Ironman watches (the one with the broken band) in my pocket on longer runs or track workouts so I don't have to constantly reset this function.
So, a good value, and a nicer watch to wear during the day than most digitals, but not as optimized for running/endurance workouts as one would hope.

Update - October 2011 - 3 years later, I still wear this watch every day, and it still looks good and runs like new.
