Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Powerfully styled with a modern silver resin case, this Casio G-Shock analog/digital men's watch (model G511-1AV) can withstand virtually any punishment you can mete out. It features a bright yellow dial and luminous hands as well as three digital subdial windows (for the watch's sport timing features). This large, round case measures 50.2mm wide (or 1.98 inches), and it's completed by a black resin strap that tapers as it winds around your wrist.

It includes a 1/100-second stopwatch with a 60-minute measuring capacity and elapsed time, split time, and 1st/2nd place time modes as well as a 60-minute countdown timer. Other timekeeping functions include 12/24-hour formats, year/month/date/day display (with an autocalendar to the year 2099), daylight savings time on/off, and world time from 29 time zones/27 cities (with city code display). It has four independent daily alarms (with one snooze alarm) and an optional hourly time signal. It also offers a scratch-resistant mineral crystal, AfterGlow LED electro-luminescent backlight, and battery life of up to 2 years.

The Casio Story

With the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.

In developing its own wristwatches Casio began with the basic question, ""What is a wristwatch?"" Rather than simply making a digital version of the conventional mechanical watch, we thought that the ideal wristwatch should be something that shows all facets of time in a consistent way. Based on this, Casio was able to create a watch that displayed the precise time including the second, minute, hour, day, and month — not to mention a.m. or p.m., and the day of the week. It was the first watch in the world with a digital automatic calendar function that eliminated the need to reset the calendar due the variation in month length. Rather than using a conventional watch face and hands, a digital liquid crystal display was adopted to better show all the information. This culminated in the 1974 launch of the CASIOTRON, the world’s first digital watch with automatic calendar. The CASIOTRON won acclaim as a groundbreaking product that represented a complete departure from the conventional wristwatch.

Casio transformed the concept of the watch — from a mere timepiece to an information device for the wrist — and undertook product planning based on this innovative idea. We developed not only time functions such as global time zone watches, but also other radical new functions using Casio’s own digital technology, including calculator and dictionary functions, as well as a phonebook feature based on memory technology, and even a thermometer function using a built-in sensor. The memory-function watches became our DATA BANK product series, while the sensor watches developed into two unique Casio product lines of today: the Pathfinder series displaying altitude, atmospheric pressure, and compass readings.

In 1983, Casio launched the shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch. This product shattered the notion that a watch is a fragile piece of jewelry that needs to be handled with care, and was the result of Casio engineers taking on the challenge of creating the world’s toughest watch. Using a triple-protection design for the parts, module, and case, the G-SHOCK offered a radical new type of watch that was unaffected by strong impacts or shaking. Its practicality was immediately recognized, and its unique look, which embodied its functionality, became wildly popular, resulting in explosive sales in the early 1990s. The G-SHOCK soon adopted various new sensors, solar-powered radio-controlled technology (described below), and new materials for even better durability. By always employing the latest technology, and continuing to transcend conventional thinking about the watch, the G-SHOCK brand has become Casio’s flagship timepiece product.

Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, and the radio-controlled function means users never have to reset the time. In particular, the radio-controlled function represents a revolution in time-keeping technology similar to the impact created when mechanical watches gave way to quartz technology. Through the further development of high radio-wave sensitivity, miniaturization, and improved energy efficiency, Casio continues to produce a whole range of radio-controlled models.

1.0 out of 5 stars Casio G-Shocked, January 21, 2008
This review is from: Casio Men's G511-9AV G-Shock Ana-Digi Yellow Sports Watch (Watch)
There are a few reasons I returned this item.

To start with the watch hands and date are almost impossible to see in low light conditions. Even in a well lit, bright room, I had to really look hard to see the hands on the face. The hands blend into the face of the watch making it very difficult to do a quick time check. I have very good vision and had to hold the watch close to my face to read the time. The date window is so small, I'm surprised anyone would be happy with this watch if they use that feature. (just look at the photo) I was really disappointed to see that there was no way to set the watch to show the date and the day simultaneously. Maybe that's trivial but all of my other Casios have shown date, day and time all at once. (I have owned 4)

I also tested the light while standing in a closet. I was very disappointed to see how dim it is. I couldn't see the time hands at all and the date is so tiny, you almost need a magnifying glass to read it. There is no way to see the time of day using the watch light. NONE. Why on earth would you design a watch light that doesn't show the time when it's illuminated? I sure couldn't use the digital feature considering the window and font are so small. I work the night shift and need a watch that really lights up. I need to be able to see day, date and time without using a flashlight for additional light.

In closing I currently have a G-Shock model G-3110-1VCF that has been abused and worked great for years. I have given a very honest review and would not recommend this model or any similar model to anyone. Thank you and I hope this information can be helpful in your decision.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good looking watch. Not everything I wanted., September 5, 2008
This review is from: Casio Men's G511-9AV G-Shock Ana-Digi Yellow Sports Watch (Watch)
Amazon provided terrible customer service throughout the buy process, the worst I have ever been through.

The watch itself is not bad. My only complaint is that it doesn't show digital date, time, and day of week at the same time. Other G-shocks do show all the info simultaneously. For this one, you have to toggle between the three.

It has the super durablity of a G-shock but looks like a more expensive watch. I just dread daylight savings time when I have to figure out how to change the time, maybe I should just move back to Arizona so I don't have to deal with it.
