G-7700 review,

This review is from: Casio Men's G7700-1 G-Shock Trainer Multi-Function Shock Resistant Watch (Watch)
I bought this watch a week ago at an unbeatable price of $47 incl. tax and shipping (almost 50% off the RRP). What I wanted was a watch that was useful for athletic training (I'm an avid runner and swimmer). What I received was a superb well-rounded G-Shock that surpassed my expectations regarding the purpose of the watch, one that has several unique features that other G-Shocks presently do not feature:
*1/1000 stopwatch with split and 999 lap time functions--perfect for athletic training, getting splits etc. while running or swimming. *Auto-start feature--a 5 second countdown prior to starting the stopwatch, with cool animated graphics. *2 100-hour countdown timers, adjustable to the second--ideal for interval training on long runs. *Customizable alarms for weekend and weekday--great for people like me who have to wake up at 7am on weekdays and noon on weekends without having to constantly switch on/off different alarms. *Customizable hourly signal--set it so that it only beeps on the hour during any specified period (ie. 7am-11pm), so that it doesn't beep while sleeping. *Flash alert--red and green LEDs go off in sync with the alarms and stopwatch auto-start systems. With the stopwatch auto-start, the LEDs are employed to create a cool motor races effect by having red lights going off in sync with the countdown and green lights going off at the start itself. Other features of the watch: *World time in 48 cities--48 cities is new for me, previous G-Shocks only had 27 or so, perfect for frequent travelers like me. *EL backlight (blue-green) with auto-EL function. *A very comfortable strap with good fit, and a thin case (by G-Shock standards) makes for one of the most easy-to-wear G-Shocks ever. *Buttons are extremely easy to push. Some users have complained that the "G" button on the front of the watch, which activates the EL backlight, is hard to press; that wasn't the case for me. Some cons: *EL backlight duration (1 second)--too short for me, especially on a display with so much information, presumably to increase battery life. 2 or 3 seconds would be ideal. *Non-solar powered--given all the power-hungry features of this watch, solar power would be ideal, so as not to worry about running down the batteries with all the alarms, lights and all. However, these are minor issues. I'm sure this watch would suit anyone out there--by far one of the most feature-packed yet comfortable-to-wear and stylish G-Shocks out there, perfect for any occasion.

I bought this watch from a local big box. Paid a fair price, but it is cheaper from this seller on amazon. I wear this watch everyday at home and at work as an offshore commercial diver. It has stood up to much abuse and harsh exposure. Everyday at work in the Gulf of Mexico, the watch is soaked in sea water and beaten regularly against all sorts of objects. I have dropped it numerous times onto a metal deck (from 4 feet or so), rubbed it accidentally against all manner of sharp or rough objects (the plastic "armor" really protects the crystal and buttons), and I have worn it while diving in the gulf numerous times. The watch has proved waterproof and resilient from surface all the way to 212 feet deep. I could not actually believe that it survived a mixed-gas dive to that depth along with all water decompression stops for a total time in water of over 2 hours! Pressure changes do not affect this watch. Besides surviving in the water, it has been just fine in the decompression chamber on deck.
Other reviewers can testify to the functions of this watch far better than I. I know how to work the stopwatch function and keep the time set correctly. I bought this piece simply to stand up to my job and it has. For a true commercial diver's watch, look no further than the GShock. Dive safe.

G7700 for Running/Endurance Workouts,

This review is from: Casio Men's G7700-1 G-Shock Trainer Multi-Function Shock Resistant Watch (Watch)
Decided to purchase a G-Shock after going through a few Timex Ironman models over the last few years, which never seemed to last that long (LCD display on one, watchband on another - which is integrated with the timepiece on that model and can't be replaced, making the watch unwearable when the band breaks - and most recently, the stopwatch function intermittently stopping on another).
The Casio G-Shock line has a good reputation for durability, and this particular model (G7700-1) is a good watch at a good price, and I do like it. A couple of things to note, though, especially for those planning to use it during running/endurance workouts and considering a switch from the various Ironman models: 1) The button to illuminate the face, although marked with a cool "G", is relatively difficult to depress - a bit too small and recessed. And when you do depress it, the face illuminates very briefly. This probably helps extend battery life, but for those who find themselves doing their workouts a lot in the dark, either in the early morning or evening, you will likely want to use the illumination function often enough to find it inconvenient, especially in comparison to the various Ironman models, which usually have larger buttons for this and stay illuminated a bit longer. 2) The interval timer function allows a cycle of two different intervals in sequence, but once set up, will only repeat the cycle 5 times. For those who like to use an interval timer for run/walk intervals, speed work, etc., this is simply not enough. I've taken to carrying one of my old Timex Ironman watches (the one with the broken band) in my pocket on longer runs or track workouts so I don't have to constantly reset this function. So, a good value, and a nicer watch to wear during the day than most digitals, but not as optimized for running/endurance workouts as one would hope. Update - October 2011 - 3 years later, I still wear this watch every day, and it still looks good and runs like new.

I love this watch for so many, many reasons.
Main screen: top bar displays (alternately) year, dual time with another time zone, and the Julian Day (today, 14 November, is Julian Day 318 with 47 days remaining in 2009). This is HUGE for me. I'm deployed in Afghanistan and will be coming home in January. I have 47 plus change til I come home. With the press of a button, I can see what time it is at home so I don't call back at ridiculous hours. Also displayed are the month, day, and current time. What's REALLY cool when you're traveling: You can just change your base time zone and the referred dual time zone stays constant, so you don't have to wonder and calculate "well...I was 1 hour ahead when I left Norfolk, now that I'm in Kabul, what time is it back in Texas and California??" Stopwatch: usual functionality, multiple splits, laps, etc. Side buttons for start/stop/split. Accessible enough for me with my 6 foot-one inch frame and big fingers. Recall: recalls the split times and laps. Useful for review of those long workouts on the run or in the pool. Timer: two different timers. Alarm: 4 alarms plus a snooze and signal, more than I need, but I've found reason to program four different alarms. World Time: you can set two different time zones - I can see simultaneously what time it is in CA and TX - ok, not rocket science, it's only a 2 hour diff, but if you had relatives across continents, this might come in handy. The indiglo is bright, but a common knock against it is that it lights up for a pretty short amount of time. No big deal, press the button again.

Very pleased. Given the large number of features, it is relatively easy to set up the watch features.
- Lightweight (lighter than my titanium Citizen). - 5 alarms (easy to set, one snoose and one visible, options for weekday-only, daily, etc.). - Display contrast can be adjusted (somewhat difficult to read watch in lower contrast). - Multiple sports-related timers (more than I need, but likely useful to many). - Very useful illumination (EL) system (short duration, but only a problem if changing settings). - Buttons can't be pressed easily, but I like that design. - Watch band is comfortable, but will be buying a band adapter shortly. - Lists calendar week (since my company has fiscal year beginning 01/01, watch gives me FW). - Very attractive design. Not quite as big as I expected, but plenty big enough. Not dressy.

Excellent Watch With a Good Set of Functions for a Good Price (Purchased @ $ 55.44..),

This review is from: Casio Men's G7700-1 G-Shock Trainer Multi-Function Shock Resistant Watch (Watch)
I've only had this watch for 2 weeks and I'm really impressed with it. At a first glance it's lightweight yet it does not look or feel cheap and has a stylish look to it. I have average sized wrists and the watch does not look too big or too small for me. I'm a runner and I also do a lot of circuit training and weight training circuits and this watch is very useful for both.
FUNCTIONS: MODE 1: Displays Year, Day, Month, Time and the Week of the current year. MODE 2: Screen displays the 99 lap stopwatch. MODE 3: Displays the records of the two latest stopwatch times. MODE 4: Displays the countdown timer. MODE 5: Displays 5 4 alarms, 1 snooze alarm as well as an hourly chime. MODE 6: World Time that displays 3 time zones. PROS: *Choice of 3 different displays on your 1st MODE screen 1) Year, Day, Month, Week, Time. 2) Local Time, Date & Dual Time (1 other time zone of 48 cities). 3) Local Time, Date & the Julian Day of the year (Julian Day: current day of the year and the number of days till the end of the year). *99 lap stopwatch with an option of a 5 second countdown feature prior to starting the stopwatch. VERY useful for an athlete, runner or swimmer training on his own. *Records up to two previous stop watch times. Very useful for an athlete training on his own with little time to write down his or her times during training. *Has two timers that cycle 5 times which is useful for interval training.(Some customers have complained that 5 cycles aren't adequate and that maybe true as it would have been better to be able to input the number of cycles as the user sees fit. However, I have overcome this by simply restarting the timer as soon as the final cycle finishes. Now I can continue the cycle on increments of 5 or just stop the timer when I finish). *Customizable alarms and hourly signals. Alarms can be set for weekends or weekdays and the hourly signal can be set to chime within a desired time period of the day (Eg: Between 6am and 10pm so it won't wake you at night). *World Time displays up to 3 different time zones (home time, dual time and another time zone of your choice) from a total of 29 time zones and 48 cities. (Eg: I live in the USA, my Mum & Dad live in Asia and my brother lives in a different time zone in Asia so I can see all three time zones at a glance in World Time MODE). *The Home Time is displayed in every single MODE except for the Stopwatch MODE. Helps you to keep track of real time when you are training. (Eg: The Home Time is displayed while using the countdown timer). *Water Resistant 20 Bar (660 feet). I haven't really tested this yet but I do shower with the watch on. =) *Shock Resistant. I'm a part time Rugby coach and the watch gets a bit of beating from time to time. *Lightweight. I hardly feel it on my wrist. *Good size, not too big or too small. *Stylish design. It can be worn as a casual watch to many places, events and occasions. CONS: *The EL back light button (the button with a G on it) is a tad too hard to depress AND it stays on for only about a second when it should stay on for at least 2 - 3 seconds. This design must be to preserve the battery life and its actually not a problem if press the button a couple of times more to keep the light on longer. *The buttons could have been a little bigger. I find myself searching for them during workouts, especially during a running/sprinting circuit and I need to press the stopwatch or lap timer button. *Not solar powered. CONCLUSION: This is one of a very few watches on Amazon.com that have not received a 1 star or 2 star review as of 2/25/2011 so it has a very few negative features. Its particularly useful for Runners, Athletes, Swimmers, Cyclists, frequent travelers or people with family/friends in multiple time zones. If you are looking for a watch that is feature packed yet inexpensive compared to similar watches then this is the watch for you. Great buy, I have no reservations in recommending this product to anyone.

This review is from: Casio Men's G7700-1 G-Shock Trainer Multi-Function Shock Resistant Watch (Watch)
This watch has more features than expected. After hours of reading reviews I chose it for it's 99 Lap/Split-time stopwatch with recall features (including Best lap). It beats an Ironman Timex over features and toughness. I think no other Gshock has as many features as this one.
Got this at a very low price of $46 here on Amazon. I'm from the Philippines and the stores here sell it at $130. Big big savings! Most useful features are: 1. 99 Lap/Split time Stopwatch - very useful for my Crossfit workouts 2. Recalls total elapsed time, time per lap, and best lap 3. Stopwatch has 5 second countdown auto start with cool graphic and lights 4. Alarms are very audible and very visual (green/red light alert feature). Up to 4 alarms can be set. 5. Timer - up 24hr countdown timer, with interval timer (audible/visual alert) 6. Dual time - displays both date and time of the city 7. World time - displays up to 3 cities. I've set all date format to 24hr. 8. Whole display evenly lights up at a firm press of the G button. This can also be automated when you raise the watch towards your face. 9. Very light, straps are comfortable 10. Very tough. So far I've tried the freeze test and it's a-ok! I know it can withstand a strong impact but I don't want to dent/scratch the metal frame around the face. 11. Big display. Some find it too busy but it's well with me. Cons: 1. Hope the light stays on longer. It's only 1-2 sec. 2. The interval timer repeats only about 5 times. It should have an option for more cycles.

I'd been looking for a watch that would give me functions like the Timex Ironman series of chronographs, but with the toughness and superior build quality of a Casio G-Shock. Problem is, there aren't too many G Shocks that have functions that are suited for this. Sure, most have chronographs and timers but they are basic.
Enter the G7700 (and the sister G7710 with negative display and gold trim). This is a very unusual G Shock. It boasts 29 world time zones, a dual time mode, four alarms, two countdown timers that run intervals with each other (perfect for interval training), and a stopwatch accurate to 1/1000th of a second with 99 laps. The interval timers are terrific and will repeat up to 5 times (though I wish you could set them for more). This makes it perfect for interval training. When one finishes, the alarm will go off, the other will start, and red and green LED's will flash alternately for ten seconds. This is invaluable for me. While the alarm isn't that loud, the LED's are bright when flashing (I run at night usually) so I can tell when the next one is starting even while listening to music through earphones. The stopwatch also has a unique feature, a "countdown" till start, where the display will animate a 5...4...3...2...1...Start type countdown, with the LED's going from Red to Green at the start, sort of like race track christmas tree lights. Cool beans. I'll never use that part of the stopwatch but it's still cool. The display is unusual in that the main Home time can display the year, or days past in the year with how many left to go, as well as day and week number. I like this feature. The watch has three 'lines' of display with the top two noticeably smaller. If I had one complaint, it would be that these two top smaller displays are slightly harder to glance at while running, but this is minor. Backlight is standard bluish-green on the face, however the backlight time isn't adjustable. It lasts about 1.5 secs and will not stay on if you keep the "G" light button pressed. Display contrast is adjustable which is something I've not noticed on many G's. This Casio module is impressive. Hopefully they use this more often, rather than keep on cranking out the same old modules in different cases each year.

I searched for weeks to find a watch that was practical yet easy to operate. This unit is all of that.
I haven't tried all of the functionality yet but for the price it has already more than paid for itself. Easy to set up and easy to use, the only downside is my previous watch would return to the time after using the stopwatch function, whereas this one you have to go through all the functions to return to the time screen. This can be a bit annoying, but I can live with that. |
