Product Description

The Casio Story

With the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.

In developing its own wristwatches Casio began with the basic question, ""What is a wristwatch?"" Rather than simply making a digital version of the conventional mechanical watch, we thought that the ideal wristwatch should be something that shows all facets of time in a consistent way. Based on this, Casio was able to create a watch that displayed the precise time including the second, minute, hour, day, and month — not to mention a.m. or p.m., and the day of the week. It was the first watch in the world with a digital automatic calendar function that eliminated the need to reset the calendar due the variation in month length. Rather than using a conventional watch face and hands, a digital liquid crystal display was adopted to better show all the information. This culminated in the 1974 launch of the CASIOTRON, the world’s first digital watch with automatic calendar. The CASIOTRON won acclaim as a groundbreaking product that represented a complete departure from the conventional wristwatch.

Casio transformed the concept of the watch — from a mere timepiece to an information device for the wrist — and undertook product planning based on this innovative idea. We developed not only time functions such as global time zone watches, but also other radical new functions using Casio’s own digital technology, including calculator and dictionary functions, as well as a phonebook feature based on memory technology, and even a thermometer function using a built-in sensor. The memory-function watches became our DATA BANK product series, while the sensor watches developed into two unique Casio product lines of today: the Pathfinder series displaying altitude, atmospheric pressure, and compass readings.

In 1983, Casio launched the shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch. This product shattered the notion that a watch is a fragile piece of jewelry that needs to be handled with care, and was the result of Casio engineers taking on the challenge of creating the world’s toughest watch. Using a triple-protection design for the parts, module, and case, the G-SHOCK offered a radical new type of watch that was unaffected by strong impacts or shaking. Its practicality was immediately recognized, and its unique look, which embodied its functionality, became wildly popular, resulting in explosive sales in the early 1990s. The G-SHOCK soon adopted various new sensors, solar-powered radio-controlled technology (described below), and new materials for even better durability. By always employing the latest technology, and continuing to transcend conventional thinking about the watch, the G-SHOCK brand has become Casio’s flagship timepiece product.

Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, and the radio-controlled function means users never have to reset the time. In particular, the radio-controlled function represents a revolution in time-keeping technology similar to the impact created when mechanical watches gave way to quartz technology. Through the further development of high radio-wave sensitivity, miniaturization, and improved energy efficiency, Casio continues to produce a whole range of radio-controlled models.

3.0 out of 5 stars No Instruction to adjust metal band, May 10, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Casio Men's MTG900DA-9V G-shock MT-G Atomic Solar Watch (Watch)
There are no instructions on how to adjust the metal band. The band is ridiculuously large.
I don't know whose wrist it is suppose to fit. Unlike other manufacturers like seiko where
you can adjust the band by moving a spring loaded rod along a metal clasp which has lots of holes in it and covers a distance
of an inch and a half or more. This watch has metal clasp with only 3 holes over a distance of less than a quarter inch. The only way to adjust this band is to take it to a watch repair place and have the links removed.
Note that Amazon includes a "watch care & returns" brochure which states that "watches that have been resized or otherwised altered will not be accepted for return". Ain't that a catch 22?

5.0 out of 5 stars Atomic accuracy, solar power, and G-Shock ruggedness, April 14, 2007

This review is from: Casio Men's MTG900DA-9V G-shock MT-G Atomic Solar Watch (Watch)
Atomic watches are highly-accurate quartz watches which are synchronized each day with a time signal broadcast from the definitive U.S. Atomic Clock in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Thus, all atomic watches are always accurate to within a fraction of a second at any time. Since atomic watches adjust automaticaly to and from daylight saving time they are the ultimate in accurate watches. Casio makes -- and Amazon sells -- a wide selection of styles of atomic watches to suit various needs and tastes, but all are equally accurate. The Casio G-Shock series is especially rugged and the solar powered models, such as this, never require battery replacement. Atomic accurary, solar power, and G-Shock ruggedness is an appealing combination at a quite reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Watch!, September 7, 2008

This review is from: Casio Men's MTG900DA-9V G-shock MT-G Atomic Solar Watch (Watch)
This is my SECOND MTG9000DA-9V! I bought my first watch of this type about 3 years ago. The watch is still working like a charm. One minor note of caution: I sat my older watch out on the balcony on a scorching hot day and left it out in the sun too long. About a half hour later, I went to get it and the screen was black\color baked off of the golden piece just above the "G-Shock" label. I thought that the watch was fried, but after the watch cooled down, the display returned to normal. The only apparent damage was that the battery life seems to have decreased slighly along with the above mentioned discoloration from being baked in the hot sun. This "damage" was purely my own fault, and the most noticable loss is the cosmetic fading of the small top "simulated button". I bought a new one just to have one that is cosmetically perfect. Now I wear my old one around the house and my new one when I want to be stylish. The watch is excellent. I'm often complimented on the style of the watch, and the atomic/solar features give the watch the appeal of a much more expensive timepiece. I had an earlier (plastic) version of the watch several years before I got the MTG900DA-9V, and greatly appreciate the much improved solar panels. I can see myself prefering this exact watch style for many more years to come!
