Amazon.com Product Description

The rugged and sporty Casio G-Shock digital watch features atomic timekeeping via radio signal for extreme accuracy, enhanced shock resistance, and water resistance up to 660 feet (200 meters). This solar powered watched comes with a power saving function and offers a battery life of 11 months on full charge without further exposure to light. The classic digital-gray display comes with an automatic electro-luminescent backlight with afterglow, and three circular digital displays at the top provide additional information such as mode, timing, and battery level. The world time can be set for up to 29 different time zones (30 cities), with optional daylight savings and a city code display. The automatic calendar shows the month, date, and day below the time and is pre-programmed through 2099. This convenient, world-savvy watch also comes with a 1/100 second stopwatch, four daily alarms and one snooze alarm, a time recorder, and hourly time signals. Designed for durability, the watch is built with a stainless steel case and mineral dial window. The silver-toned stainless steel bezel and stainless steel band with fold-over push-button clasp further the watch's elegantly casual look. This watch is backed by a 1-year limited manufacturer's warranty.

The Casio Story

With the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.

In developing its own wristwatches Casio began with the basic question, ""What is a wristwatch?"" Rather than simply making a digital version of the conventional mechanical watch, we thought that the ideal wristwatch should be something that shows all facets of time in a consistent way. Based on this, Casio was able to create a watch that displayed the precise time including the second, minute, hour, day, and month — not to mention a.m. or p.m., and the day of the week. It was the first watch in the world with a digital automatic calendar function that eliminated the need to reset the calendar due the variation in month length. Rather than using a conventional watch face and hands, a digital liquid crystal display was adopted to better show all the information. This culminated in the 1974 launch of the CASIOTRON, the world’s first digital watch with automatic calendar. The CASIOTRON won acclaim as a groundbreaking product that represented a complete departure from the conventional wristwatch.

Casio transformed the concept of the watch — from a mere timepiece to an information device for the wrist — and undertook product planning based on this innovative idea. We developed not only time functions such as global time zone watches, but also other radical new functions using Casio’s own digital technology, including calculator and dictionary functions, as well as a phonebook feature based on memory technology, and even a thermometer function using a built-in sensor. The memory-function watches became our DATA BANK product series, while the sensor watches developed into two unique Casio product lines of today: the Pathfinder series displaying altitude, atmospheric pressure, and compass readings.

In 1983, Casio launched the shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch. This product shattered the notion that a watch is a fragile piece of jewelry that needs to be handled with care, and was the result of Casio engineers taking on the challenge of creating the world’s toughest watch. Using a triple-protection design for the parts, module, and case, the G-SHOCK offered a radical new type of watch that was unaffected by strong impacts or shaking. Its practicality was immediately recognized, and its unique look, which embodied its functionality, became wildly popular, resulting in explosive sales in the early 1990s. The G-SHOCK soon adopted various new sensors, solar-powered radio-controlled technology (described below), and new materials for even better durability. By always employing the latest technology, and continuing to transcend conventional thinking about the watch, the G-SHOCK brand has become Casio’s flagship timepiece product.

Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, and the radio-controlled function means users never have to reset the time. In particular, the radio-controlled function represents a revolution in time-keeping technology similar to the impact created when mechanical watches gave way to quartz technology. Through the further development of high radio-wave sensitivity, miniaturization, and improved energy efficiency, Casio continues to produce a whole range of radio-controlled models.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great looking watch and it does a great job..., January 1, 2005
By
I have been a G-shock owner for over 15 years. I have also owned some other brands (Swiss Army, Pulsar, Citizen) and those were some good watches but I always come back to the GShock.

There are several reasons why I like this model of G-shock:

1. G Shock's can never really be considered classy, but this comes a little closer to that designation. I love the steel band and the silver appearance of the watch. It is a watch you can wear hiking (and not be worried that you will break it) and to a night out on the town.

2. Discussion buzz--Few watches can you spend time in a group discussing but this is one watch you can do that with...people are immediately drawn to it because of its appearance (size and color) and it is cool to discuss all the things that this watch can do.

3. Solar--I am tired of replacing batteries in a watch...no need to with this watch.

4. Atomic TimeKeeping--I love how the time is accurate every day. No adjusting. Very cool.

5. Time Zones--If you are traveling quite a bit, it is nice to be able to simply scroll through the time zones and find your location. Nice feature.

Overall--I enjoy this watch because of its functions and its appearance. I also like explaining this watch to other people. This is a great watch...to steal Siskel and Ebert's line, 2 thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this watch, August 27, 2004

The version I have is MTG900. However, my comments most likely apply to this entire line of watches.

I LOVE my watch. I'm very, shall we say, "uptight" about having the correct time. My wife has an atomic analog watch (my gift to her), and all 3 wall clocks in our house are atomic. I keep our servers at work synchronized with the US Naval Observatory time. So now you know how uptight I am about time.

Although it appears bulky when you open the box, it's actually quite light (considering the size). I've been using it for a year, and the size has never been a problem for me.

I live in rural Vermont, with a large mountain sitting between me and the transmitter in Colorado. However, I still get the signal almost every night (provided I leave the watch away from metal objects, as stated in the instructions).

I love the Solar feature. In the summer (I'm a rather active outdoorsy kind of guy) it stays fully charged. In the winter, after about a month of cold and dark, I'll leave it near the window at work for a few hours to get some good strong sunshine. It has never run down to "sleep" mode, and I doubt it will anytime soon. (It goes to "sleep" when the battery gets below a certain voltage, but even then it keeps time for up to 2 years! It just won't try to synchronize with the radio transmitter in that mode).

So it has atomic accuracy, and a solar recharging battery. What else should a watch have? How about being nearly indistructable. The instructions say that once you put it on, you can operate a rock drill (I assume they mean jack-hammer), or race motocross bikes (I'm not making that up, that's a direct quote). I'm not big on motorcross, or operating a jack-hammer, but I'm VERY active, and having a watch that can keep up with me is great. I snowboard 50 days a year, bike and run more than that, as well as swimming when I can. The watch still looks new.

It has a timer that I use for timing my runs, and an alarm that gets used quite often.

Other features are a 2nd time zone setting (I set mine to GMT, which is convenient), multiple alarms, the running timer (with 1 split), and a strange one that I've actually used a few times: a "memory" that just sets the time that you hit the button. Good for when the wife says "what time did you put the rice on?", and I'll have it on the memory. It stores about 9 memory recordings.

All in all, I am really glad I bought this watch, it has replaced all other watches as the only one I wear. It is hyper-accurate, runs forever (given enough sunlight), and you can use it with your jack-hammer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Battery Replacement should never be needed + Link Removal, July 27, 2005
By

(REAL NAME)
Hi, I read K. Hutchison's review dated (July 25, 2005) that expressed a concern about the NiCad battery and having to replace it. So, I did a little search and found out that it is powered by a cobalt-titanium battery.

This watch is more than just a Wave Ceptor atomic watch. It's actually a member of Casio's G-Shock MT-G line, and it incorporates Casio's Tough Solar powering technology, so battery replacement should never be needed. I emailed Casio to ask how long the battery will last but have not heard back from them.

The watch is powered by a solar cell and a rechargeable battery (CTL 1616 cobalt-titanium). Average battery life is 6 months from full charge to Low (recharge needed) under normal operating conditions if left in the dark without light.

The manual is small print so you might want to download a free copy at the Casio Web site under the module number 2638 and enlarge it on your computer. (...)

Band adjustment is a little difficult and I have resized about 30 or so over the years. To remove a link there is a little pin that you push down the direction of the arrow ... there are 2 small rings at the top of the pin. Get the smallest jewerly screwdriver between the two small raised rings up at the top and press down - this is not easy but it is the secret. The other end does not compress so you have to have them correct when you reinstall the pin once a link has been removed. Also, there are two slots on the clasp for minor adjustments that you push the pin in to compress it and move it to another slot which is a piece of cake.

I had a heck of a time finding this watch locally and finally found it at Sears as well as online too here at Amazon.

I bought one of these and it is big, bold and very accurate and nice. I do love my new watch which can be rugged out hunting or worn as a dress watch.
