Nice watch for the price, April 14, 2008
This review is from: Casio Men's AMW701B-5AV Pathfinder Watch (Watch)
The watch looks great and is durable. I am one of those guys that never knows what day it is. Typically analog watches with a calendar mode are a challenge to set right (at noon my watch mysteriously advances to tomorrow because I didn't set it right) and since it doesn't know what month/year it is, it assumes all months have 31 days so it has to be reset monthly - and since I never know what day it is, I forget to reset it - a never ending "do loop" of failure ... so I don't bother, and still never know what day it is. I haven't yet crossed the line into dorkville where I am willing to wear around a digital watch with a rubber/plastic band and housing. However, thanks to the "split screen" digital mode using the bottom third of the analog face, this is the first nice looking analog watch where I have actually been able to use the calendar mode. Because it is a "perpetual calendar" (i.e. it knows the days of each month) it is always correct - I can actually rely on it - and I do - and I love it.
Also, at first I wondered, why do I need the digital time showing on the same watch where the analog time is showing? Then, after having it I discovered two great benefits:
1) The digital time is in military (24 hour) time - making those afternoon conversions go away.
2) You can change one without changing the other, so when you go on travel, one can be set to show local time while the other maintains the time back home.
So why not 5 stars? Two reasons:
1) The watch face is surrounded by a 360 degree marked and labeled compass face ... but ... since there is no compass needle, and the tick marks are immobile, this is PURELY decorative. Decorations are OK, and I like something to look nice (and this does) so long as they don't get in the way, but these actually make telling the time more difficult in the bottom half of the hour (more on this in #2).
2) On the top half of the clock face, identifying 5 minute increments is quick and easy with large numbers and hash marks. Loosing the bottom third of the watch to a digital screen is great, but a side effect is that you also loose the numbers and hash marks. I could live with that, but since there are (decorative) orange compass markers at SE & SW, they catch your eye and mislead time glances (as they are not at 5 minute increments, but rather 7.5 minute increments).

Very happy with it. It has taken a lot of hits, it's been underwater, in the sea,.. and it works great.

Great Watch, July 21, 2008
This review is from: Casio Men's AMW701B-5AV Pathfinder Watch (Watch)
This is a very good watch, I use the digital time a dual time and I have Athens time on it. I did change the band and placed a leather band, which seems more professional.
