This review is from: Casio Men's Pathfinder Triple Sensor Altimeter/Barometer/Digital Compass Watch #PAG40-3V (Watch)
I love this watch and never travel without it. I followed the instructions in the manual and use the thermometer a lot. To get an accurate ambient air temp reading I just take off the watch and wait about 8 minutes in the shade. You can also calibrate the thermometer and found the factory setting to be dead accurate! I discovered that if you read the temp while wearing this watch it will read your skin temp and have found this to be very helpful in monitoring my skin temp. Anything less than a 83 degrees means I am starting to get uncomfortably cold and need to warm up. 86 degrees skin temp is perfect for me. Knowing this allows me to tell if I have a fever or just over worked etc.
I use the altimeter alarm function when I fly to alert me of a faulty cabin pressure system during my commercial flights. I set my PAG 40 alarm to 8000 which is the maximum altitude pressure allowed in passenger cabins set by the FAA. If the cabin pressurization goes above 8000 ft the alarm will sound on the PAG 40. There is a graph at the top of the screen to check your altitude history. The graph is also used for tracking barometer history. I calibrate my altimeter daily to get an accurate reading since the barameter will change by the hour. The compass feature is great and you can also calibrate that too. I find the compass usefull at night and on heavy overcast days. You get 5 seperate alarms and a short alarm for the top of each hour. All the alarms can be turned off or on seperately. The stopwatch function does split times and single timing. It will not do laptimes for example timing laps at a race on after the other. It runs on 4 batteries part# 395. Which I was able to change them myself. Watch speed calibration was also accessible! The display is large and easy to read. I have owned my Casio PAG 40 for two years now. The watch band has held just great so far and the watch is free of defects. I plan to buy two more of these watches.

great watch,
This review is from: Casio Men's Pathfinder Triple Sensor Altimeter/Barometer/Digital Compass Watch #PAG40-3V (Watch)
My first one last through 3 assignments in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. Half the team wore this watch and the other half the Suunto Vector. Must of us owned both. I found the Casio Pathfinder easier to use.
The only issue I had with my watch is sometimes it went into conflict and went through all the modes and would not stop until the batteries were removed. I was the only one that had this issue. We worked in extreme enviroments and the watch took a beating. Sand Storms, attacks of all types, crashes, high heat 125 - 130 degrees. Cold below zero for long periods. All the features were a great asset to all of us. We often compared data with our other instruments like GPS and other sensors we had. The watch was close. The large dial is a plus in the field. I would still have the first one but when I took it to a watch shop for new batteries, it was not sealed properly and on a swim exercise it leaked.

The PAG 40 is an older model in the Casio Pathfinder series. It does not have some of the features of the newer models. However, it does have one of the best displays of the entire series. It also has a "rugged" look to the watch which I and many find appealing. It isn't an atomic model, but it keeps very good time. The "abc" features of the watch are not always precisely accurate, but close enough for the average person's needs. I tend to use the barometer and I like the 24 hr graph to show the barometic tendency. I have several different Pathfinder models and this older model remains one of my favorites. The only "negative" would be that a battery change involves getting 4 new batteries.

Great Watch!,
I bought this watch as a gift for my husband. He absolutely LOVES it! He used it all through Army Ranger school and all his classmates wanted one too. He likes all the features, the stopwatch, barometer, altimeter, etc. It has held up for over two years during some really rigorous outdoor training and is still running great and looks great. I would recommend it for anyone, especially someone who likes to use all the bells and whistles it comes with.

I am a happy camper to have this...,

Casio Men's Pathfinder Triple Sensor Altimeter/Barometer/ Digital Compass Green Watch #PAG40-3V is a great instrument to have if you are a seasoned camper like me. I am a trekking enthusiast and like most trekkers know how to use instruments to my advantage and find my way to the destination...To this, I must admit, I was fairly surprised by the accuracy that PAG40-3V brings to the table. This watch gives fairly accurate readings for altitude, temperature, direction, atmospheric pressure etc. I read some negative reviews about people not being able to get accurate readings...I respectfully disagree. I have tested altimeter, barometer, thermometer and compass (which, I believe, are the four chief selling points of the watch) and, as I already said, the readings showed tolerably least or most of the times no deviation from actuals. All in all, a great piece.
One more thing. I tried Suunto (almost settled for X-Lander) and Timex offering similar features before I bought this. I was surprised to see that compared to Suunto (which is relatively expensive) this watch offered same performance in lesser price. I will miss "Tough Solar", but it doesn't hold me back from declaring pride in my new possession. I plan to use this watch for Trekking in Laddakh towards the end of this year. This will be the litmus test and I am fairly confident (on the basis of extensive lab testing I already performed to see how good this piece of work will hold when I am out there) it'll rise to meet my expectations with flying colors.

Casio Men's Watch Pathfinder Module 2271 PAG40-3V,

This review is from: Casio Men's Pathfinder Triple Sensor Altimeter/Barometer/Digital Compass Watch #PAG40-3V (Watch)
Well, with great sorrow I had to say goodbye to my old Pulsar 344064 Multi-Chronometer, Stop-Watch, Timer and Alarm that I bought back in 1993. After more than 16 years and a faded LED screen, albeit it is still going, I got this Casio Watch Module No. 2271, Men's Pathfinder Triple Sensor Altimeter/Barometer/Digital Compass PAG40-3V. Now let me assure you that, if you are in serious training, rigorous exercising or you are an avid outdoorsman willing to invest time in understanding its capabilities, then the Casio Module 2271 PAG40-3V is for you! The Casio 2271 has big numbers that make it easy to see when you are running, swimming, hiking or in any other competition. After 16 years with my Pulsar, the Casio 2271 shows the advancement in technology. The digital compass is a welcomed technological improvement, whereas it permits immediate directional reading, allowing you easily to calculate your proposed destination. Of course, it is for estimate purposes, for one wishes to have a sturdier compass as a backup. Nevertheless, the Casio 2271 is generally accurate in directional reading. A second feature is the Barometer/Thermometer, which the little internal screen allows viewing an average of the past days and surprisingly is very accurate in determining the weather. A rise in the internal graph represents the improving conditions, while a decline in the graph shows the deterioration of it! Furthermore, the barometer pressure displayed is in 1hPa/mb units and only in this format! The thermometer is a nice addition. However, perhaps because the watch is so close to one's wrist the reading tends to be +/- 8 or 9 degrees Fº above ambient temperature (or +/- 2 or 3 degrees Cº). It is great when doing a long distance or marathon run and one can adjust it to either Fahrenheit Fº or Celsius Cº. Finally there is the Altimeter for those that set altitude goals when mountain running or climbing. The altitude measures and memory measurement are so convenient when trying to better climbing rates. The feature also allows you to either let the watch automatically perform the measure or to manually operate it! While in SCUBA, the watch supported my diving at 15 meters or around 50 ft. Although the manual claims it can withstand pressures of 100 meters or around 238 ft. Incidentally, I must confess that I have neither gone to such altitudes nor such depths to verify such claims. Now, in addition to all these features the watch has its standard stop-watch, alarm, and for night outdoorsmen an automatic light sensor or manual if you prefer it! There are some nuisances such as the date feature structured; year, month and day and cannot be formatted to the military mode; day, month and year or the U.S. mode. On the one hand, there are other watches such as the Casio Men's Digital Compass Twin Sensor Sport Watch SGW100-1V, which holds itself pretty well with a lot of similar features at a much lower price! The Casio SGW100-1V has two nice sensors, including the compass feature and temperature reading. In addition, it includes the basics of a sports watch such as the chronometer, timer, and alarm. It is also water resistant to moderate depths. It will be a good watch for those that are starting a serious regimen or experiencing the outdoors. On the other hand, if you are an enthusiastic active individual that wants to test the limits of both your life experience and have a watch to be your companion, then you should seriously think about the Casio Module No. 2271!

My husband originally had a comparable Silva product which turned out to be defective (two different ones both got moisture under the face when he wore them out working in humid, not wet, conditions!). So I decided to get the Casio and he loves it. The readings are accurate and he does not have to carry the instruction book around -- very intuitive. We hike in the NYS Adirondacks so all the features are fun to play with.

Frustrating Altimeter Function, all else is ok,
By Casio customer service reps are nice but tell you that you have to speak to one of only 2 watch guys in order to ask questions and they can't be called, they have to call you. And they can't tell you when they will. Well, for one, they never do, and for two, I don't believe they exist, or they quit out of frustration. Casio used to have a great reputation for their watches, now they leave it up to web pages and FAQ's to take care of that. Sort of like ATM's were going to do without tellers so we would save money and frustration. Well, I'll give the banks a half an "atta-boy" for the ATM, but Casio should not just be ashamed of themselves, they should all be put in a big hot air balloon with only their stinking pathfinder to guide them. Then let's see how fast they make changes.

Casio is less than candid. I bought this watch as a wilderness tool. I am a Civil
Engineer, Surveyor, Hunter, outdoorsman. etc. The watch gave "reasonable" service for about 12 months, and then the batteries needed replacement. LO AND BEHOLD! One has to send the watch back to Casio for battery replacement. Not even a jeweler will attempt battery replacement and neither I nor any of my friends possess the microscopic tools needed to disassemble the watch. Also, the Casio owner's manual directs one to return the watch to Casio. BAH, HUMBUG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Further, I sent the watch back to Casio for the quoted $19 fee, which I paid by Visa. Then, Casio revised their repair fee up to about $83, which I refused to pay and I asked that they return my watch and refund that portion of the initial $19 which was not consumed by shipping costs, which I was responsible for. That was about two months ago and so far I've gotten no refund and no watch. I THINK THIS WATCH AND CASIO ARE BOTH RIPOFFS............. |
