Amazon.com Product Description

The Casio QV-R4 incorporates the latest in digital-imaging technology at an agreeable price. It boasts a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, full-motion movie mode, and 11 MB of built-in memory to compete with today's best digital cameras. The sleek and stylish stainless-steel body is solid to withstand heavy use, and is compact for easy traveling.

Optics and Resolution
The 4-megapixel CCD sensor captures razor-sharp images of up to 2,304 by 1,712 pixels, creating prints with sizes of up to 20 by 30 inches. You won't miss any of the action with the 3x optical zoom and, when combined with the 3.2x digital zoom for a total magnification of 9.6x, the QV-R4 will capture that subtle moment. Focusing can be set to automatic for ease of use, manual for more precise control, and infinity or macro for more specific needs.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on 11 MB of internal memory, which stores about 23 images with settings at normal resolution. If you want more memory, the expansion slot is compatible with any MMC or SD memory card. You can quickly and easily transfer your files onto a PC or Mac using the USB port for computer editing and sharing with friends and family.

Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the QV-R4 can also record movie clips of up to 30 seconds at a resolution of 320 by 240 pixels.

More Features
Many of the QV-R4's settings can be modified for photographers in need of more creative control, such as exposure, white balance, and flash. There are also several different shooting modes, including interval, continuous, and night scene. With the "best shot" mode you select a stored photo that looks similar to the photo you want to take and the camera automatically sets up to achieve that look. You can easily keep track of all these modes using the large 1.6-inch color LCD screen.

Power, Size, and Contents
The QV-R4 comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has an approximate battery life of 100 minutes. The camera itself measures a compact 3.5 by 2.3 by 1.2 inches and weighs 7 ounces without the battery. Other standard accessories are a camera strap, battery recharger, CD-ROM with imaging software, and USB cable.

Manufacturer Product Description

You will recognize the craftsmanship the second you pick it up. You will appreciate the image quality as soon as you view your images. They are sized right and priced right. They are easy to use, it's hard to believe they are so feature rich!

The compact configuration of the high-performance QV-R4 camera make them perfect for recording those special moments whenever and wherever they happen. A totally new LSI system provides lightening-fast response of about 0.01 second, which means there is virtually no time loss between the point you press the shutter release and when the image record beginning.

A simple, stylish stainless steel body provides both a high level of durability and a feel of quality. Modes are selected using a flat-profile dial, and all function keys are carefully positioned for easy, intuitive operation. Images can be stored on an SD memory card, and the camera also includes 11MB of built-in flash memory that allows recording even when a card is not loaded or when the memory card is full.

High-resolution primary color CCD in a compact configuration
With the QV-R4, the latest in device miniaturization was employed to make it possible to pack a 4.13-megapixel primary color CCD into a compact body that measures a mere 3.5? x 2.3? x 1.2?. The QV-R3 has a 3.34-megapixel CCD. This level of resolution makes it possible to capture all the nuances of subtle flesh tones and fine details of scenery shots, and primary color filtering ensures vivid colors every time.

Advanced 3X optical zoom lens
Seven lenses in six groups, including an aspherical lens, provide advanced 3X optical zoom capabilities. This, combined with 3.2X digital zoom, provides a combined maximum zoom factor of 9.6X.

Release time lag of approximately 0.01 second
The release time lag from the point that the shutter release button is pressed until the image is recorded is about 0.01 second when focus lock is used. This means you get exactly the shot you want.

Best Shot Mode for instant setups
Simply select the Best Shot scene that is like the one you want to record and light metering, exposure, saturation, and other settings are configured in an instant. Two new innovative features are Coupling Shot and Pre-Shot:

Coupling Shot - This feature makes it possible for two people to be included in the same image, even when they are the only two around. Person A records Person B on one side of the image. A transparent view of the first image remains on the monitor screen so Person B can use it to compose the other side and record Person A. Only the second image is stored in camera memory, showing both Person A and Person B.

Pre-Shot - With this feature you can compose the background you want and record it. A transparent view of the background image remains on the monitor screen so you can ask someone to record you against the background, using the monitor screen image as a guide. Only the second image is stored in camera memory, showing you against the background you want.

Triple Self-timer
The Triple Self-timer records three consecutive shots with a single shutter release button operation. This simplifies the recording of group shots that include the photographer because a single operation gives you a choice of three images from which you can select the one you want.

World Time and alarm features
The World Time feature lets you keep track of the current time at home and in another time zone when traveling or for any other reason. It also eliminates the need to make troublesome clock settings whenever you travel to another time zone. You can set up to three alarm times and even have a specific image appear on the monitor screen as a reminder when an alarm time is reached.

Album function displays using HTML files
The camera generates HTML files that make it possible to view recorded images on your computer screen in an easy-to-use album format. You can use the album to browse images and even print album pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best mini-digital camera out there...period, December 16, 2002

"eublet" (Daphne, Alabama United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Casio QV-R4 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I simply love this camera. My wife and I recently had our first child, and I started looking for a good digital camera to capture all the moments. I wanted something that was compact, fast, had a good zoom, and didn't eat batteries up too fast. The QV-R4 has gone beyond all my expectations. It's much better than any of the Canon Elph camera's which I have also had experience with. It is extremely sturdy, and the battery refuses to give up, especially when you turn off the LCD and use the eyepiece. The manual says you cant take 600 something pictures without the LCD, and I believe it. I bought a 256 MB SD card to compliment the camera, and I can take over 100 pictures with it on the highest resolution setting, which will print flawless 8x10 inch pictures. If I want good 4x6 inch prints, I can lower the resolution and store 400 pictures on one card. If I want internet quality pictures, I can store 2400 on it. The camera's response time is amazing. I have taken over 500 pictures with it already, and not once has it refused to take the picture the second I pressed the shutter release. It focuses fast, and it has a plethora of options to choose from. I recommend this camera over anything else out there. Unless you NEED a large digital camera for publishing quality photos, don't waste your time. You can slide this in your pocket and take it with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice, December 31, 2002
This review is from: Casio QV-R4 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I'm more of a filmmaker than a photorapher so I don't own a $15,000 digital still camera. I have, until now, been very hesitant about going digital when it comes to still photography. It's very difficult to compete with the resolution of 35mm film cameras. Problem being: you never know when you're going to snap that perfect shot you'll want to become a table top picture. I could've easily bought a digital camera before, but without paying INSANE amounts of money I would always be resorting to a resolution comprimised photograph. With this puppy, I can take many photos at the highest resolution. I have two 64MB memory cards can can take about 30 pics on eash with the hightest setting. That's a 2MB picture!! The day I bought it I plugged it directly into my iBook and lauched iPhoto...without any software to be installed, it simply begain downloading the pics. While in the computer I decided to zoom in on the pictures to see how good the resolution gets....I just kept zooming and zooming and the picture looks good. I feel comfortable now that I'm not loosing out on quality by using the digital means.

It has a couple of features I think are very cool. One is the timelaps feature. You set the camera on a table and tell it to take a picture every 1-60 minutes and it comes on automatically and snaps it. Another one are what casio calls the 'best shot' options. One of the things I hate the most is giving up the camera to someone to take a picture because I may have to be in the shot. I'm always very particular about the angle, subject size etc about a shot...but most people don't seem to be. One of the best shot options allows me to snap a photo and it will take that picture and overlay it onto the lcd display at about a 50% opacity so the new photographer can align the camera using the photo I took as a guide to line everything up.

In comparing this digital camera with my 35mm film camera I noticed a couple of things about the imagery. Film has been engineered for 100 years to produced the nicest looking image. Applicable digital technology about 20. Fleshtones and Blacks are the hardest things for the digital image to compete with, but the casio does great. Sometimes the automatic settings come under par, but I can adust the shutter speed and f-stop manually to get the image just right using the lcd. I haven't figured out how to calibrate the flash to match film, but that's for another weekend....it works pretty good on auto. (i'm picky)

Keep in mind that I haven't tried hundreds of these cameras in this price range but I was instanly attracked to the casio because of the nice interface, its small size, and its big punch.

I'll still use my film camera of course when beauty is of upmost importance, but for a camera I can stick in in my bag and be happy with the Casio rocks.

Good luck to all. Scott Morabito,

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZED!, January 16, 2003
This review is from: Casio QV-R4 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I was totally amazed by all the functions that this camera can perform. It has options that my more expensive cameras don't have. The main reason I bought this camera is to have a light weight digicam to carry in my purse at all times. I was missing too many opportunities. I have taken dozens of test shots and have not been disappointed. The color of creeks, in this part of Texas, is brown from the tannic acid, I merely use the built in blue filter and I have wonderful water! All the grass is dead and the pines have brown needles with a little green, I use the built in green filter and it looks like summer. The clarity is good right out of the camera and the images need little or no post production work. It surprised me that the battery life is so good since I thought that with a pack that small, I would run out in no time, but it's excellent. I can't say enough good things about this camera. I like it much better than my G2. The ability to regulate the flash is great, since I would tend to blow macro shots right out of the scene. The option to reduce the flash output is extremely valuable to me. The camera is unbelievably easy to use and I started shooting before having had time to read the manual and had no difficulty. I'm in the process of reading it now and it is also excellent, easy to understand and to the point. The camera is also fast, which is a definite plus!
