Optics and Resolution
The QV-R40 features a 4-megapixel resolution that captures vibrant colors and produces images up to 2304 x 1712 pixels for photo-quality prints up to 11 x 14 inches. Other resolution modes include 2240 x 1680, 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960, and 640 x 480.

The QV-R40 packs a 3-segment telescoping type 3x optical zoom lens with sliding mechanism that makes it possible to fit everything into an ultra-thin, stylish aluminum body. Optical zoom provides the means to produce beautiful, low-distortion close ups. Using digital zoom in combination with optical zoom allows a total zoom of 9.6x with optical 3x and digital 3.2x combined. The 8-24mm zoom lens is equivalent to 39-117mm in 35mm photography.

Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the QV-R40 can also record up to 30 seconds of video (without audio) at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

More Features
With the QV-R40's Best Shot mode, both amateurs and professional photographers can take outstanding professional-quality photos without fussing over calibrations, filters or attachments. There are 21 settings within the Best Shot mode, including portrait, coupling, flower, sundown, text, food, and natural green.

Storage and Transfer
Images can be stored in the QV-R40's internal 10 MB memory or on optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

The QV-R40 has 1-second power up time and industry leading (as of July 2003) 0.01-second release time lag (both values approximate), ensuring you can capture those special moments whenever they happen.

• Coupling Shot: When there are only two people present, Person A composes the image of Person B against a background and presses the shutter release. This freezes the image on the monitor screen. The final recorded image shows both Person A and Person B, as if the were both standing in front of the camera.
• Pre Shot: With Pre Shot, you compose the background you want and press the shutter release. This freezes the background image on the monitor screen. Then you can ask someone else to record your image, using the frozen background as a composition guide. The final recorded image shows you against the background you want.
• Calendar Screen: Each date of the full month calendar screen shows a thumbnail of the first image recorded on each date. This visual diary of images makes it possible for you to quickly search for and locate the image you want.
• Triple Self-timer: The Triple Self-timer records three consecutive shots with a single shutter release button operation. Then you can select the best of the three and keep it.
• World Time and Alarm Functions: World Time lets you select one of 162 cities in 32 time zones around the world as your home time. When traveling to another time zone, simply select the applicable city, and time and date settings are adjusted automatically. A total of three independent alarms help to make sure you are on time all the time. You can even have a specific image appear when an alarm time is reached.
• Album Feature : The camera stores images in a Web browser-viewable that allows you to browse images in an album format. The album feature uses HTML format, which means you can incorporate an album directly into a Web site, and even print directly from the album.
• SD/MMC Memory Card Slot, Built-in Flash Memory: In addition to its 10MB of built-in Flash Memory, the camera also supports use of thin, compact SD memory cards and MMC cards (not included). It is easy to copy images between memory cards and built-in memory.
• Favorites Folder Keeps Important Images Private: 320 X 240 size images can be copied to a Favorites folder located in camera built-in memory. Images in the Favorites folder do not display during normal image playback, which means you can keep your personal images private when carrying them around in camera memory.

• Photo Loader: Connect the bundled USB cable to your computer and start up PhotoLoader, and JPEG and AVI images are transferred automatically from the camera to your computer.

(...)P>Well, for starters I'm not an expert on digital cameras (I've owned them for awhile, but I'm a casual pic taker); however, I did a great deal of online reasearch before purchasing this one. I felt this model gave me what I needed in the price range I could afford. I was a little nervous though - as I couldn't find user reviews anywhere (just the pro reviews - which were very helpful).

First off - Bad News.... there is virtually no paper user's manual. The GOOD NEWS though is they include a digital users manual on CD ROM with the camera (it's very in depth). The REALLY GOOD NEWS is you can download the user's manual before you even buy the camera from www.casio.com!! (I did this, and by the time my camera arrived - I felt like a pro using it).

The camera is not "chinzy" feeling (like some others - Fuji for example) - it's solid built and just feels like quality. It's small, but not to tiny that it's difficult to use. The LCD screen is a good size (and you can zoom to view pics magnified from the LCD.

The camera does everything it promises. I adore it.

The bells and whistles are fun (though many of them not necessary for someone like me). I love the 10 second delay shot. This way I can get in the pic myself.

Regarding battery life: Keep in mind - I always use the LCD screen and flash (so my batteries wear down faster than other people's might). I'm getting about 50 or so pics per charge from the Sanyo Batteries that come with the camera. I'm getting about 24 pics per charge from the Kodak 1700 batteries I purchased. I'm happy with this. The batteries charge rather quickly - and with 3 sets - I'm never stuck. These NimH AA's are pretty inexpensive - so it's really no big deal. I do wonder if my lack of pictures per charge wouldn't be improved with a "better" charger (the one that came with the camera is fine....but I bet it isn't top of the line).

Here is something someone might want to know (particularly someone unfamiliar with digital cameras). They say you MUST (MUST MUST) use an AC adapter power whenever connecting the camera to the computer to transfer pics etc. This is NOT included with the camera. So - add about $30 to the price of this camera pretty much since you must buy this "accessory" :) (The camera is STILL WORTH IT).

I used my camera to take a full week of pictures in an extremely dim lit setting (halloween theme week). (...))

Yes - another tip: In really really dim lit settings (almost dark) your camera might give the "red" sign (meaning it's not focused) - take the pic anyway (all mine came out in focus when this happened to me)

The camera is great - I'm very glad I purchased it!!

I spent hours researching digital cameras at ZDnet, epinions, and Popular Photography and I finally decided on this one. I have NOT been disappointed in my choice in the slightest. I normally use this to take pictures of my two young sons, but I have taken some scenery shots as well. The pictures always come out beautifully.

Unlike the previous reviewer - I use batteries to download my pictures and have never had a problem. My understanding from the manual was that it is recommended, not required. Batteries are quick to run down when I use the LED readout to take pics, but the charger is quick and I'm up and running again in about 3 hours.

I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone looking for good value for the money.

I bought this camera in early September when it first came out, and I love it!! This little camera does everything and it is so compact that I carry it in my purse. I have 2 little kids and this camera is wonderful for catching all the milestones that they reach.

Some other reviewers have mentioned the batteries, well I have only had to charge mine 3 times the entire time I have owned it and I take alot of pictures with the LCD screen and the flash. I also just use the batteries when I am downloading the pictures and so far I haven't had any problems.

My only concern with this camera is the red eye. I have a baby and it seems as though every picture I have to edit to get that out. I never had this problem with my Kodak digital, but it is easily fixed with decent picture software.

All in all this is a wonderful camera and I have enjoyed it.
