5.0 out of 5 stars Great Referee Watch!
I work as a football referee for youth through high school, and this watch has served me great when we need to keep time on the field. It has a set of pre-programmed count down timers that work great for field timing. Or, it has a feature where you can program in a custom time interval. So in the case of games, you can set up a time interval for each quarter,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Complicated, NO blue backlight (Illuminator), June 14, 2008

I was just looking for a simple sports watch with both a stopwatch and countdown timer, but this had a lot more than I expected (or needed). It has some timer features particularly for referees, which you may or may not find a use for. While all the features are easy enough to learn, having six modes means a lot of button presses (up to 6) to get back to the main mode. Fortunately, the main mode has a different beep sound, so you can keep pressing it quickly without looking until you hear it. It does what I need though with some complexity. Perhaps I will come to use the other features as well.

Looks: Nice; a bit thick for my taste (about 1/2"; spec says .58"), but it seems a lot of men's sports watches are like that these days
- The main picture shown above is misleading - there is NO blue backlight, but a cheapish orange LED that emits from left side over a dull gray background. The word "Illuminator" inscribed at the top of the watch is also misleading. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that supposed to be Casio's blue backlight technology? Maybe this watch used to have it, but not now. The LED works fine but does not look as nice
- Lens is not recessed so it is easy to scratch

Battery: 10-yr spec assumes use of any feature only once/week (a joke?)

Manual: Hard to read as it is very small and thick
- Get the free 3-page PDF manual which has all the info but is much easier to read, at the watch manual section of the casio site (enter 3100 for Module No.)

Stopwatch: I did not like it; it seems specialized for things like soccer
- Two counts displayed
- The Main count shows 100ths of sec but cannot be stopped at all (kind of useless). It can be set to beep after a specified elapsed time (like end of soccer regulation)
- The small count in corner (harder to read) acts like a standard stopwatch. No splits; just start, stop. It does not show 100ths of sec. In soccer, can use to count stoppage time

Preset countdown timer: Can choose from these times(min): 10,12,20,15,20,25,30,35,40,45
- Auto-repeat feature: If enabled, counts the number repeats (up to 99). If disabled, it just counts up after it hits zero and sounds the alarm, like most countdown timers do
- I like that the current time is in the corner so I don't have to switch modes to find out

Interval Countdown timer: You can use this as a regular countdown timer settable from 1 to 59 min, though I wish it could be set higher. There are also 8 additional timers which you can set individually. The watch will detect which timers are set and run them sequentially. You could use this for interval training or game timing. Auto-repeat can be set for the whole sequence.

World Clock: You can have this display the time in practically any other time zone. 3-letter codes for cities, and DST can be set separately for each

Alarm: Standard features, hourly chime

Other: Button beeps can be turned off

Overall: A decent watch, especially for the price. It's growing on me, I think.

I work as a football referee for youth through high school, and this watch has served me great when we need to keep time on the field. It has a set of pre-programmed count down timers that work great for field timing. Or, it has a feature where you can program in a custom time interval. So in the case of games, you can set up a time interval for each quarter, half-time, etc. Or, if your using it for a work out, you can program the intervals for wind sprints, 1 minute sprint, 30 second walk, etc.

One of the complaints I noticed in the other posts was with regard to the backlight. It's true it's not the indeglow (sp?) backlighting, it's just two LEDs on the right half of the face, however I have found it still easy to read using the backlight in a low light environment.

I would say this is an excellent buy for the money, and would highly recommend it to a referee or as a general workout timing watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars much more useful than my $1000 Movado, October 30, 2008
This review is from: Casio Men's W756-1AV Digital Sport Watch (Watch)
I had to really look hard for a watch that matched my criteria. I had a Casio that had a countdown time but nowadays the feature is really hard to find, don't know why.

There are many, a surprising number, of features on this thing.

This is not exactly my watch as I got a nylon band which I much prefer, I think the nylon looks much more stylish. One can always buy an after-market band.

I wear my watch with just about every think I wear from jeans and work gloves to wool slacks. The size is discreet while still easily viewable day or night. The solid black color, which mine is, blends in well with with whatever I am wearing. The buttons are also low profile. The face resists scratchs very well and the scratchs I have put on the thing do not affect the visiblity at all.

The only complaint about this watch is that I find the buttons too hard to press. I have only hit a button accidently once and that would have changed any watch's function. Not really a complaint but I think the watch could be just a little more stylish without sacrificing any of the quality that make this watch great but then I am not a designer.

One last thing. Can't beat the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap, Tough, and works perfectly in many conditions., February 14, 2011

This review is from: Casio Men's W756-1AV Digital Sport Watch (Watch)
I work as an ocean lifeguard for a living, and as a lifeguard I go through watches really fast and I need a tough watch for the ocean conditions. For years I spent $80 - $200 on a new watch every year by freestyle, nixon, quicksilver etc. I was tired of spending money on watches that just got thrashed so I experimented with the cheapest usable watch I found on amazon. This little gem has worked perfectly for an entire year. I work and play in the ocean and put this watch to the test. In result, I've discovered that this watch is better than some of the name brand watches i've purchased in the past. For the price, this watch is worthy. I will never buy over priced watches again unless it's for diving or navigation purposes. Thanks Casio!

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, but about what I needed, September 27, 2010

I was in need of an inexpensive watch with a good countdown feature. It happens to have a number of preset countdowns that work for me. I use the 40 min and 45 minute a lot as a soccer referee. Not fancy, but seems solid and works well, plus at this price I don't worry much about losing or breaking it.

I use this watch to officiate football games. It does exactly what it needs to do and it's affordable. I enjoy the fact that the "Start" and "Stop" button are the same (as opposed to "Start" being with "Reset").

I wish that the preset times would stop when they expire instead of continuing with the next preset time, though.

NOTE: I've actually had this watch for a year; I'm purchasing another for my husband!
