Gr 2-4 In this confusing fantasy, Caspar the cat visits an imaginary frozen kingdom of giant mushrooms where he meets a dragon the size of a mountain. This is the secret kingdom of cats, but children learn little about it except that cats live there in small houses and that somehow the land is frozen until the dragon is defeated and a volcano erupts. The land then blooms again, and the grateful cats stand silent escort as Caspar sails away on his leaf boat. Has Caspar dreamed this or has he really saved the kingdom? Only Caspar knows. There are lovely and imaginative illustrations, including some detailed studies of wild flowers and mushrooms. The dragon is shown in bright shades of red, suggesting the fire within him. The story, however, is for older children, as the cat meets scary mushrooms and climbs over ``living flesh.'' The adult vocabulary has words like ``malachite,'' ``vortex,'' and ``cavernous sockets.'' The story seems to go on and on with no real purpose, and even the saving of the kingdom of the cats is not explained. One can easily skip this title. Margaret C.
