Viewing recommendations from a Cass. buff, November 27, 2001

A great video set, though some of the prints are cut down to fit the TV screen. I also don't find the voice over in Minnie and Mosk. very illuminating. But it's a great viewing experience anyway!
Start with Minnie and Moskowitz. Go next to Mikey and Nicky. And only then tackle the "harder" ones--hack your way into deepest darkest Cassavetes. A challenge, but worth the effort.
If you want to learn more, much more, about the films, I HIGHLY recommend Ray Carney's Cassavetes on Cassavetes, THE definitive "behind the scenes" story on the making of the movies. It's available (at a discount!) on this site. Type in his name. Also type Cassavetes' name into any search engine to locate Carney's internet site devoted to the filmmaker. It provides oodles of extras: quotes by Cassavetes, notes on the films, odd facts connected with the productions, interesting backstage stories, etc. that will make this set complete.
For the ultimate experience, buy these films, read that book, check out the Cassavetes material on Carney's site, and learn. Cassavetes still has an awful LOT to teach us about ourselves. One film by him is a college degree in filmmaking in itself. Happy viewing!

Minnie and Moskowitz, May 19, 2000
This review is from: Cassavetes [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The wonderful running commentary by Gena Rowlands and Seymour Cassell as they re-watch the movie doubles the worth of the DVD. A second watching also brings out the comedy of the dialogue, and makes you appreciate Seymour Cassell's hard-working performance.

it's sad that trash tv is inundated with cash from advertisers, but movies like these, that reach deeply, are, it appears, verbotten for teens. put on a little joe strummer, fire up the cassevettes, open Punk Planet and The Sun, and let's get down to business.
