Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Pickering's definition of a proverb is "a short, pithy saying that is concise, memorable (usually traditional) and expressive of a commonplace truth or perceived fact of experience." Collected here are more than 3,000 entries, covering familiar and unfamiliar proverbs from the English-speaking world as well as a wide representative selection from other cultures. Entries attempt to pinpoint each proverb's precise meaning, where it originated, when it was first used, and what its subsequent history has been. Some entries provide examples of early usage and explore links between proverbs that deal with related topics, beliefs, and concerns.

Pickering, an experienced freelance writer and editor who specializes in compiling arts and general reference books, includes Brewer's Dictionary of 20th Century Phrase and Fable [RBB My 15 92] among his recent credits. His entertaining and informative writing style makes this easy-to-use dictionary a pleasant experience for students of language and folklore as well as general readers seeking elucidation of an unusual or sometimes familiar proverb encountered in reading or conversation. It has more entries than Concise Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs (2d ed., Oxford, 1992). Other proverbs dictionaries, such as Burton Stevenson's Macmillan Book of Proverbs, Maxims and Famous Phrases (Macmillan, 1987), Wolfgang Mieder's Prentice-Hall Encyclopedia of World Proverbs (Prentice-Hall, 1986), or the more recent Multicultural Dictionary of Proverbs [RBB My 15 97], are far more comprehensive, but Pickering's work is a useful supplemental title for school, public, and academic libraries.
