A cold hard look at a brutal theatre of war,
By
This review is from: U-Boat Killer: Fighting the U-Boats in the Battle of the Atlantic (World of War (Rigel)) (Hardcover)
A most enjoyable book about the war against the U-boats by a man that was in the thick of it. The author might not be the best writer of history, but he's pretty good at it. It's all here, the frustration, the terror, the boredom, the thrill of the hunt.
Cmdr MacIntyre spent several tours at sea hunting submarines and is imminently qualified to tell the story. He commanded several different classes of ships and served long enough to be directly involved in the introduction of new technology and weaponry, so you get a good feel for the hardware. However those tours at sea also stressed him almost to the breaking point several times so his story has a very human side as well. One of the things I liked the most about the book though was his honest, blunt evaluations. Which senior officers were good and which weren't. What tactics worked and which didn't. So many books written by participants are afraid to step on toes/hurt feelings or go to the other extreme and read like gossip columns. The author states the truth as he saw it at the time, with no axe to grind that I could detect. All in all a book that anyone interested in the subject, neophyte or well read, will find most rewarding.

I am delighted to have located this book written by Captain Donald Macintyre. The book is in perfect condition. I have read a great deal about the second world War and the Battle of the Atlantic. This book should be compulsary reading in schools.
Donald Macintyre , along with Captain John Walker, also of ASW convoy fame, should have been knighted as they did more for the war effort and freedom of the world than all the football stars, sporting personalities and pop singers put together. They are in a world class of their own, but sadly hardly heard of today. The world never learns from the mistakes of the past. Captain John Walker did not survive the war, he died as a result of exhaustion from his tremendous dedication to his duty. Some of us still find time to contemplate those days of the war and give our respects to those brave men who gave their lives to defeat Hitler and his vile regime, so that we can live in freedom today.
