I bought the Kassell's based on the recommendation of my teacher, but I don't like it. I am a language student learning German professionally for 20 hours/week. This dictionary has only 35,000 words and is printed horribly. The newstype is smudged and printed on low-quality newsprint. I find this book physically frustrating to read and discern what it trying to tell me.
Buy Webster's New World German Dictionary instead. It is gorgeous, organized better, and printed with crisp black type on bright white paper. It has over 100,000 words and it much better for daily use. I love that one.

As a Vocal Performance student, this resource is necessary for learning to pronounce the word properly as well as understanding the meaning of the word. The IPA is great. The definitions are concise. This is the Best all around dictionary with IPA that I've found. You can't go wrong with it!

When I studied Spanish in high school and college, I used my Cassell's dictionary all the time. It includes helpful phrases, verb tenses, and irregular words. The German version of this dictionary is just as good. I used it to communicate with my aunt, who speaks very little English. Don't waste your time or money on other translator dictionaries--this is the only brand to buy!

I could not wait to recieve "Cassell's German and English Dictionary" after I'd ordered it. I've been wanting to translate some German songs and progress even more in the German language as well. So as soon as this book came to my house I immediately began looking through the pages and translating. If you don't mind small text, then everything is easy to read and few pages smeared but it's nothing bad. I can read every word written pretty clearly. And there are some verb and number charts in the back too which can be helpful. I can tell that I am going to be using this book a lot for as long as I have it. This product is definitely worth more than the great price is got it for.

There are over 35,000 entries. That is just the right amount for a portable dictionary. This was originally used for a German class. Now I use it to interpret German subtitles in silent movies. There is a table in the back of "German Irregular verbs" and another for "English irregular verbs."

The book itself appears to be well laid out. The pronunciation aids were the deciding factor for us as several of the other German-English dictionaries did not include them. So for the book itself we would rate it as a 5 star.
Lowering our overall score was that we purchased a used book that was described as "used - very good". Well, the book is definitely usable but I would hardly describe it as "very good". The cover is quite tattered and the pages are showing their age with numerous bends, folds and the like. If I were picking the term for this book I would have chosen poor to good at best. I can only imagine what a copy that Amazon terms "poor" looks like. |
